Midlevel M&A just lateraled to my V10 firm and have been doing 75-ish billable hrs per week for the past three weeks. I’m exhausted from sleeping 4-5hr per night. Is this typical or is my firm just toxic? Feel like I can’t physically do this long term - any thoughts on whether litigation is more sustainable or what area to switch into within biglaw?

So if I am a rising 5th year corporate / M&A lawyer in NY who has consistently billed ~1950 over my first four years, gets all market comp, and takes several weeks of vacation per year, I should stay put?

like

It’s unfortunately not that unusual over the past 12-18 months. Litigation hours have generally been quite a bit lower, but, even assuming you could switch, are you willing to go back some class years potentially?

Agreeing with all this. When lit is insane, it’s insane, but otherwise it seems much more bearable than the recent corporate situation.

Tbh sounds kind of typical for a V10, which is why I would never work at one.

December is generally brutal, and M&A is the busiest it has been perhaps ever, so I wouldn’t say this is necessarily typical, but V10s are rough.

Most of my past two years have been like that. Not unusual.

You get used to 4-5; no sleep or Churchill naps are were it gets really horrifying. Edit: Not suggesting that that is a daily occurrence because I am certain one would die from that.

You can always move down market or switch to another practice group that’s more chill

I lateraled to big law from a regional in August and I posted something similar assuming I was going to be told I’m overworked - but instead it seems like everyone in M&A is in this position in Q4. Hang in there, hoping 2022 isn’t as brutal. If it’s any conciliation I’ve gotten much more used to it as time has gone on. But if this continues through 2022 I don’t anticipate staying more than another year or two.

75x52=3900. I don’t think we can call that normal. But you got to stand up to them or else they will continue to walk all over you. Start setting expectations in terms of what you’re willing to do. Most people in your firm are not billing 3900.

Recently made the jump from mostly insurance defense work where my average billable rate was around $225/hr. Now the average billable rate is probably about $450/hr. For those of you with ADHD, do you have any tips for managing workload and inboxes? I didn’t take meds for a few years due to pregnancy, etc. but I started again recently. Anyone know what Weil’s average hours are like given that they don’t have billable requirements? First year in a v10 corporate group. Wondering if billable hour “hoarding” is a thing? As in, my group is busy, there’s seemingly lots of work to go around, and I’ve only gotten positive feedback so far, but this month I’ve gotten relatively few assignments. Wondering if that could be related to seniors/mids wanting to hit billable targets for themselves?

Hey All,

Just a heads up..!!

Today i learnt few things about BGV checks :

1. The basic ask is, if you have worked in ABC Company, then you will have documentation for them
2. Your DOJ across PF, Employment letters should match
3. You should have a valid PF account anf should be able to provide the same to the BGV Team if asked
4. Please don’t bluff around wth your fake organization documents, it will come negative

I saw a lot many questions across platforms for the BGV process

Didn’t love all of Bill Burr’s SNL skit, but the bit about white women is me during D&I initiatives that have pushed the hard talk about race and intersectionality aside for easy wins that elevate upper-class white women.

Most of which already have most/many of the same privileges as white men, which have been formed at our expense. Glad to see our firm is starting to have these hard conversations, and am watching white women to see if they’re really allies or simply opportunity hoarding.
