The billable hours and lack of work life balance are really getting to me and I am looking to switch to something else out of litigation, preferably in house. I am also looking to relocate to a different state. How do I go about properly marketing myself to companies that might not take my relocation and minimal experience seriously?

The stress causes some tension and that’s probably not great for the overall morale of the company long-term. I’m a second year BigLaw associate that pays market. I was offered the position at a modified salary and hourly expectation due to their expected work flow needs. I’m wondering what is the best way to approach the topic of getting on the full salary/hours. Do I wait until the bonuses are given at the end of my first year? Or bring it up at mid-year review? I’ve practiced litigation in DC for about 5+ years at a larger plaintiffs’ firm, and am considering a switch to a defense firm. Is there any insight to how many billable hours this would require, and how much time that would actually be? For reference, the firm has a 1900 billable hour requirement and the partner said I would have “no problem” fulfilling that based on the work they have.

Is it normal or ideal to continue working on a deal in your last week at the firm?

I’ll be working in a city neighboring a nearby state where my SO has to perform an essential in-person job. Since I’m not licensed in the state where my SO is working, I’d like to keep my current job where I am licensed but work from the office Monday through Wednesday, drive to the neighboring state Wednesday night and work remote at my SO’s place Thursday-Friday. I’ll keep a home in the city where I’m working. My question is: do I need to tell my boss? (I’d be productive as normal)
