Hahaha coming from somewhere just as cold and snowy ☺️
I’m a Detroit transplant as well- city has changed a lot in the last 5 years (in a good way). The restaurant scene downtown has exploded- check out Eater to stay on top of the latest openings. Would also recommend following @camerajesus on Instagram for a killer perspective on the city.
Following now! Thanks for the tip!
I did the same thing and stayed in the Detroit market for 5 years. I have lived and worked in a lot of different markets, and one thing I have consistently believed is to not complain about any perceived shortcomings. Every city has its strengths & shortcomings. I always looked for what was great about a city/market and dived in on that. Otherwise, at best you are missing an opportunity or, at worst, setting yourself up to be someone suffering through a city or job —- and who wants to be that person? Maybe the Detroit Symphony is not quite on par with Chicago, but good seats are easier to get. Ditto for getting to the countryside on weekends if that is your thing. I also learned a lot about why you must never assume your company’s place in a global industry is secure; there are a lot of lessons from Detroit’s experience over the last 60 years. I enjoyed my time there & loved Royal Oak.
Thank you so much for your input! I’m really excited about this move luckily and definitely looking forward to the city being smaller than Chicago 🙂
Live in the city (near Wayne State / Cass Corridor) or else out in Ferndale or Royal Oak if you want more of a hip satellite community kind of feel. What kinds of questions do you have?
Just moved here recently. Royal Oak is a nice place to be. It gives you the safe feeling of the suburbs but also you’ll likely be in walking distance of the downtown Royal Oak strip where there are a bunch of bars and restaurants. Plus, an Uber to downtown Detroit is only 15min which is great too.
Awesome! Thank you I very much appreciate the info! :)
I grew up in Troy a loooonnnggg time ago, but it warms my heart that positive things are being said about Detroit and the surrounding suburbs. Royal Oak has always been a cool place, Ferndale is coming up. Would agree with the other folks stay away from Troy, Rochester, Auburn Hills if you want to have any sense of anything besides the land of suburban strip malls and restaurant chains.
Awesome - thank you much for your insight!
If you don't have a family, I'd recommend living in Royal Oak, Ferndale or parts of Detroit. Wouldn't go suburbs.
What's with the Royal Oak hate? She's a 25 yo single female, assuming she doesn't know a lot of people in MI so Royal Oak is a good place to meet other young people and have fun. Ferndale is also fun and more hipster but more subdued for that age. I'd move to Ferndale if I was in my late 20s+. My opinion.
Thank you! I’ve been debating between downtown around Campus martius park and then Royal Oak areas. If I’m out in Royal Oak can I easily get to last minute sporting events in the city?
For work I will be between 3 buildings, one in Troy, one in Warren, and on occasion I’ll be downtown. Would I be up against terrible traffic trying to drive to Troy or Warren for work at 8 am coming from downtown?
Cut the difference and live in Ferndale, which is closer, hipper, and cheaper. Depending on how much you make, you could buy a nice house there (range is like $135k – $249k).
If you’re going to be mostly in Troy or Warren I’d recommend living in Royal Oak, Berkley or Ferndale (downtown RO and Ferndale will give you a fun vibe, but it is definitely a younger, fresh out of college vibe at 99% of the bars on the weekend).
Downtown Detroit is awesome and the changes that have taken place over the last 5-10 years are incredible, but the drive to Troy could suck depending on the time of day. You’ll probably be going against traffic leaving and entering the city though, so that would help.
Another thing to keep in mind is that Detroit is still lacking in some conveniences like grocery stores...there’s a Whole Foods now and some other stores are starting to pop up, but you’ll probably end up in Ferndale if you need to go to Meijer or Royal Oak for Kroger, Westborn, etc.
You really can’t go wrong, those are just some things to think about!
Why the hell would you ever make that move? Are you working on an auto account? Even so, they're all quickly dying.
Not accurate...
