I tend to think overqualified candidates are generally passed on offers due to:
1) company’s belief that their salary range would is well below candidate’s expectation, 2) roles are too much of a downgrade, or 3) Not a great fit for the existing team
Respectable way would be to say something like thank you for making time to interview me, and although the result did not turn out the way I expected, I would really appreciate any feedback on why offer was not made.
If you were over qualified, that can sonetimes be off-putting as they don't know how long you'll stay for, or they think you'll want immediate promotion. As others have said, f*** them, it's their loss and the interview will be good experience for you when you get the new role.
Yeah, I’m interested in seeing if this played a role in their decision making. They asked about this during the first phone screen and I explained that I was fine with it (the role is in the industry I want to be in and pays 2x what I make now, so the title demotion did not matter to me). Then in later rounds they asked subtle questions that maybe had to do with sussing this out (e.g. are you okay giving up your duties doing so and so in your current role?). But the interviews just went so well that it’s just hard for me to imagine they wouldn’t have focused more on that topic if that was a concern. For reference, I was interviewing for a similar role that I’m also probably overqualified for as well and they explicitly asked me if I would be trying to move on quickly…
And for the record, I wanted to stay at this company for a long time. I just wish they would have let me make the decision if they thought I was overqualified instead of making an assumption because I would have made a decision that would have been better for them. Oh well
I am sorry! This just means you are too awesome for them!

How many YOE do u have versus the job requirement?
Interesting - I wonder if they are going for someone who is a "senior" coming from B4.
Why go for a role you are overqualified for?
It’s a transition into an industry I want to be in long term…plus it would have paid me twice as much as I’m paid now
Sometimes they don’t hire people for being over qualified and not being able to pay them what’s needed.
Maybe it’s not because of you. Among all the candidates, they just have someone who might be better than you. Just keep applying. You may find a better position than this one.
