Update your resume to list maybe 15 years or so and not full work history! Give yourself the edge!!
Why wouldn’t you be collection unemployment Insurnace? The company has paid for it collect it if eligible and just bank it if you don’t need it.
You should def get on unemployment! The job market is rough for everyone, and age discrimination won’t make it any easier! I do hope that you’re able to find something good and I hope that you received a hefty severance.
Best of luck sir
You should get on unemployment as soon as you can. That money will come in handy, and depending on what state you live in, it can take a while to get it up and running. There is a lot of ageism in business, and there's no easy way around it. But be persistent, with your experience you may be able to find something.
Ageism is very real. I usually takes workers who are over age 50 6-12 months longer to find a job than someone younger.
Are you working because you want to work? Do you have enough money saved for retirement where you could (a) work another job that's more fulfilling but pays less or (b) have you considered part-time work?
I'm kind of in a similar position - I'm over age 60 and have been targeted for a 'quiet termination' at work, probably due to my age, and... it's rough out there for people our age. Wishing you the best.
I add my voice to those who encourage you to start drawing unemployment insurance. There is absolutely no reason not to. Just bear in mind it is taxable, so consider having tax deducted prior to payment.
Please don’t take this as victim blaming but it is an opportunity to remind older workers (like myself) that we need to stay on top of new ideas and tools. Don’t ever let obsolescence be a reason for them to lay us off. Best of luck to you!!
unfortunately, ageism runs rapid in all industries. Do your best to age prove your resume. There are a lot of helpful websites and YouTube videos for this. If possible look for temp and part-time jobs that could turn into full-time permanent once you prove yourself. Try applying at smaller companies and nonprofits.
Sorry to hear that you were laid off. Wishing you the best of luck. If I had any leads for you, I would share. Good luck 🍀
Best of luck to you!
I’m seeing quite a few opportunities at Ally Bank for collections. If you go to Allybank.com/ careers and add “collection” to the key word you’ll see the opportunities, including remote.
I’m on the Investment side, but even we’ve hired people (and sponsored licensing) for people who were above retirement.
Absolutely take the great advice here and claim unemployment. That’s why we pay for it. No shame in making sure you have all income streams available coming in.
PS. Don’t forget to call and find out how to roll your 401k / retirement plan. The company managing can start charging some hefty fees since you’re no longer employed there.
Happy to help if you need guidance on rolling.
Best of luck to you sir. I’m sorry your company behaves this way, but it’s absolutely real.
Can you claim unemployment at 72? There has to be some criterion that says the govt isn’t going to pay you to be retired. Curious…
Why don’t you just retire? Spend more time with friends, family, leisure..
Why all those kind of stories sounds like it's just a way to get attention to me? 72 years old and not retired... Young people struggle to find job too and there is no info in the post stated retirement social fund cannot be granted. In US when you are 62 you are eligble to apply.
I am so sorry to hear that. I know how hard being laid off can be, it happened to me right after Covid started. Hang in there and definitely keep networking and trying to get referrals to help you get your foot in the door.
You should have retired while you had the chance, since you didn't, file a lawsuit for wrongful termination on the basis of you age and race.
Best of luck, echoing others don’t think twice about unemployment.
Some states have training services as part of unemployment efforts so you may also be able to leverage that into strengthening your resume and learning about things you havent had a chance in your past work.
Your receiving SS, start drawing a small percentage from your 401k/IRA and look at consulting part time as an option if you still want/need to work.
