My company offers to pay for certifications, but I'm not sure if they're worth the time investment vs just building side projects. Which certs actually help your career?

That depends on what you want to know and what you already know. I might just take one that sounds interesting if the company is paying for it. Free money as far as I’m concerned.

The major platform/technology certs are helpful especially if you are earlier in your career or changing career paths.

Developer certs for things AWS, Kubernates, etc. never hurt and my expand your knowledge. I would avoid niche certs or IT certs .

like

Certifications can certainly help your career, but they're not a guarantee of anything. First of all, doing the work means you'll learn things, so that's always to your benefit. The certification itself merely does what it says, it certifies that you did the work and were tested and passed. It will give you credibility, but it won't necessarily mean you will walk into a new job because you obtained it.

I think the AWS cert is valuable. A lot of orgs are built on these technologies and having the upper hand on which ones to use makes you valuable

Aws certs. I am thinking about getting one.

I got rejected for an interview from Big 4 NY Audit, even had referrals from Manager + level people. 3 years w/ audit senior at mid size firm, 2 years fed tax at big 4, and 1.5 years Internal Audit healthcare. Currently self employed for a year to work on investing. Do I literally need a partner level referral to get back into Audit? I thought there was an accountant shortage.

I have family members who are inside claims reps for a large company. The company sends out emails 4 times/day showing who is currently not available for calls. To everyone working in claims in the entire country! It’s been a minute since I worked in claims. And never for this particular company. But is this shaming the new way to manage WFH.? Sounds at least toxic.

Tough time getting past final step: I’ve been trying to make a career shift for 10 months now and continue to get rejected at the last step. Im confident in the value I can provide and do well at presenting it. However, once it’s comes down to me and 1-2 other candidates, I repeatedly have been turned down for the person who has more relevant experience as they’re a safer bet for the employer. Would love advice from anyone who’s dealt with this before. It’s tough to get them to take a risk on me

So I've had 2 hiring managers and several recruiters from Amazon reach out to me about applying for some open positions with the company (android). I completed the coding assessment and now they want me to go through a round of 5 hour interviews next week. Is there a good chance I'll be hired if engineering managers are reaching out to me? I'm really not sure how badly I want to work for them and I don't want to be laid off months after being hired on. Anyone know what Amazon hiring is like?

I just got a job offer for an Entry Level Software Engineer at Boeing in Saint Louis. The salary is $82,000 with an $8,000 sign on bonus. I was hoping for an offer closer to 90k base and I don’t care too much for a sign on bonus. However, this is a lot more than what I’m making now, and would be my first SWE job. Should I counter? If so, how would I go about doing that? Thanks!

Is it common to negotiate software engineer salary at smaller companies? I know it’s common at FAANG, but what about for companies with around 200 engineers? I have a counter offer from my current company and on-site interviews scheduled for end of July with google and Amazon, but I’d prefer to go with the smaller local company if I can negotiate the salary (from offer letter) up another 5% or so.
