My fiancé and I invested in a small startup about five years ago and are about to get a $300,000 pay out (after taxes). What would you do with an extra $300k? (We have no debt, have sufficient savings and own a home already so the basics are covered.)

Lol, I did the same thing. Made money on the way up and on the way back down. IV is crap now so not worth it anymore, unless you want to risk picking it back up for ~50 (I don't).

The bigger question is, why she still your fiance after 5 years?! If you ain't happy or ain't sure, move on p1, life's true happiness comes from people and relationships

Just looked at the numbers. Wow. Shouldn’t have gotten married! Jk Honestly it all depends. Sounds like you’ve done the homework and makes financial sense. Good luck!

What is important to you - spend money there,

This is no different than selling a holding in your brokerage portfolio for a big gain. The gain is yours. Slowly build another position or look for the next startup if you have a keen eye. You mentioned market saturation so perhaps do nothing and wait. Spend some of that money. Gains are nice. If not used to splurge or do something fine, what use is money?

What was your initial investment?

How many years is this? It’s like VC like returns

Depends on what your end goal is. If it’s to amass lots of capital to tackle higher level problems and/or help people continue to invest. I think there will be 20-30% correction in the market this year before it continues to go up. Buy then. Or if you want slow growth buy rental property in growing areas and rent if you don’t mind the upkeep.

If you want to spend money now on yourself or by helping people in the near future, go for it.

Personally, if I were a partner, I would use 50k to help people, 150k to put in the market and 100k as dry powder for other venture opportunities such as the one you invested in.

Invest in other small business. Seems like a great way to make a difference in your community and help the economy at the same time. Not risk free but sounds like you’re comfortable enough.

I’d diversify it, its a big enough chunk of money.

You already have some real estate investments, i’d personally maybe through a few 10ks of it into another startup investment, lots into ETFs, some into crypto (personally i’d say eth but would also DCA since things are pretty hot right now). Holding common shares of near NAV spacs has been making me a mountain of low risk returns as well so far

If you still hold the shares and they’re liquid, look into the possibility of donating the shares. In canada it needs to be a public company, but if you donate shares, you get a tax credit for fair market value, AND don’t pay any tax on the gain on the donated shares. Get to double dip kinda

You can look for overseas properties for sale. During this pandemic, many villas in tourist spot are for sale at cheaper price. But the legal fee to obtain overseas properties is expensive.

I’ve been liking some CeFi as the market gets hot. Voyager Digital is paying 8.5% on USDC. Great cash for a pull back or passive income in the meantime

My partner and I bought our home back in 2020. We got a good deal, low rate. But we want to move into a more spacious SFH. However, as we all know this market is crazy. Everything we want costs $620k+ and bc of rates it makes our mortgage estimates $3500+. We are currently paying $2k. And it looks we need to sell the house simultaneously as look for a new one or our contingency isn’t as attractive. I know it’s based on personal circumstances. But what would you do? - not move, sell and buy?

What is a simple way to explain to my boyfriend that investing in equity with an expected return of 10% is better than paying off debt that is growing at a rate of 6%. He has student loans and is adamant that he wants to pay all of them off immediately before saving any retirement money. I understand that many individuals use this strategy but I think investing in index funds for the long haul is better from a wealth accumulation perspective, without even factoring in tax implications of 401k

BTC question.

Less than 3 million BTC left to be mined. What happens to the value of BTC once all 21 million are mined? If it’s not really an efficient payment medium, then is there a max value based on the supply/demand? To clarify, once the supply limit is reached what dictates that btc will continue increasing in value if demand should remain the same (as it’s not a practical payment medium)? Furthermore, is there a way to calculate the approx value of BTC demand once max supply is reached?
