DO. NOT. QUIT. If they want your friend gone. Then they're gonna pay for it. PERIOD. They don't want to pay severance. Have your friend document everything, put all future communications in emails/teams, etc., and get screen grabs on a non-company phone. This all falls under hostile work environment. I feel her pain. A previous manager was super toxic and I never quit. I made them do all of their dirty work. I still smile at that severance sitting in my bank account.
I agree. Do not back down. If they want you friend gone then they can fire him/her.
You are responsible for both the success and failures of your team. Sounds like they need more training, which would be your responsibility as their leader. It’s not easy, especially remote, but likely need to take one project and be really in the weeds with them to show them how it’s done. Then, you should already be doing this but sounds like not, actually review the work before it goes out.
This isn’t hard stuff - managing a team well means teach them/review before delivery. If that’s not happening your manager is right, you shouldn’t be leading. If you’re unwilling/unable/unprepared to manage then ask about moving into an individual contributor role and stepping away from managing.
They need to take a moment of deep introspection and determine if their strengths are really in managing people or managing the work itself. Not everyone is good at managing people - just because you’re a great chef doesn’t mean you’ll be a great restaurant owner. If they want to manage people and not projects then they need to focus on doing exactly that, because they’re not currently.
Idk it sounds like your friend knew they were really green and is not taking the necessary steps as their leader to review the work before it goes to client. Personally, if I’m working with a Jr team or Interns I set up meeting to review work and chat them through my line of thinking so they can understand why certain comments are being made. (I also probably don’t have as many projects going on as your friend)
I think there’s also probably more to this story that we don’t know.
There’s probably more i don’t know either. Anyway not sure what she’a going to do.
I had a friend leave a job that wanted to push her out rather than fire her and pay unemployment. She negotiated a three month severance to leave. Might be worth a try.
That sounds incredibly toxic, and the fact that the boss is actually telling her to quit and not just outright firing her is an ethical landmine. Tell her not to quit, and you may have legal recourse if she can prove they are creating a toxic work environment. The laws do differ sometimes from state to state and country to country.
My thoughts exactly.
Just a follow up on this. My friend ended up leaving the company on condition that her (now ex) boss helped her find a new job first because it wasn’t her desire to leave without securing employment. Lo and behold she found a better fit with a dream client and with more pay. Now she’s left the company, no bridges burned, and all parties happy. Shows the power of compromise and transparency!
