International presence will be an issue for your firm. Significant tax implications. Don’t assume
I agree with this poster. When moving overseas becomes a real possibility, I’d let them know to see if they would “approve“ even if no policy exists.
My company has always been fully remote (20+ years), but within the last year we put a policy in place on international working because of tax/employment/presence in a country implications.
For many countries, presence of any employee in a jurisdiction where they don’t currently operate for X number of days (usually 180+) exposes the company to becoming tax resident in that jurisdiction and subject to local taxes. Separately, many counties have rules about foreign lawyers dispensing legal advice from within their jurisdiction. It’s not as simple as you just picking up your laptop and VPN-ing in remotely. I say this not as a tax attorney but as someone who asked my firm if I could work from my home country during covid and was told no.
How capable is your firm's IT department? If you connect to work outside of the US, how fast does your IT department call you and ask what's up? This matters because 50% of the time you can get away with a commercial VPN solution like NordVPN. If the IT department is extremely capable and knows you're using a commercial VPN, then you will have to setup a VPN home server, which is undetectable, for you to connect to when you're not stateside
Did yall just misread each other? Guys, lighten up! 😂
This is the dream for me could you message me? Id love to land a job that allows me to leave the USA.
