My leadership’s new thing is verbal appreciation in various meetings.

I’m finding it awkward to respond. It’s usually someone saying kudos out of the blue and not directly tied to an immediate action. And then add the in front of peers thing.

How are you supposed to respond when they say “great job” “thanks for taking care of X” … without it turning into a never ending circular event of thank you?

Just say thank you. Appreciate your words

Better than people stealing your ideas, omitting you from meetings and accepting thanks and credit on the work you created. Count your blessings, say ‘you’re welcome’, and keep it moving.

Yeah, “they”‘do that too.—steal ideas. Usually the person giving kudos. Lol!

Ugh I hate that so much. I respond well when someone thanks me either one on one or in writing but in a big public setting makes me so uncomfortable. I worked for a company a while ago that did DISC assessments (which I hated on the whole, that’s another story) but one thing it did right was inform everyone how people liked to get feedback. Mine was very accurate and the leadership respected that. So I would either get written letters, email, or one on one from my manager and I loved it. Maybe you can just communicate with your boss or your team that you don’t like to be made a fuss over in that setting.

Maybe G1, but I’m an SME and will always be in this role for the rest of time. Everyone is forced to work with me when they need guidance in my area of expertise, so I don’t really need to build a brand and reputation for moving up and around the company. My brand is that I am knowledgeable and reliable and everyone who needs me and manages me already knows that.

I find this very interesting!

Naturally there will be a spectrum of people who like and don't like to get recognition for their work publicly.

How much of it is personality vs imposed by society is what I find interesting. I'd say that as a group, women are not good at recognising our good work and complimenting each other. So receiving recognition feels awkward and foreign to us! But having more of it should really be a good thing, right??

When my company started doing this, I felt very awkward too. But now it's a ritual I enjoy! It's great to hear about what other people are doing well, and in a few instances I've gone to them for advice on something they were complimented on! I've never had this before, and it's great to feel appreciated.

like

That does sound awkward. I would probably smile and nod. Or if in virtual setting with no camera, a quick "my pleasure."

like

You're welcome is alright

like

1st just nod and say thank you for recognizing my hard work and dedication.

2nd write that shit down on a list to keep track and ask for a raise at your next review. 😎 I mean you have proof, it was in front of everyone. They will either stop with the compliments or pay you more! It’s a win win!

like

I find it interesting. It’s like someone sent an email saying “giving kudos is the new thing.” I can see it as a form of recognition especially on a major project accomplishment. However giving kudos for the sake of just doing it. Awkward. And I too usually have to come up with a response.

If it’s virtual and you don’t want to stop the flow, be on camera to give a thumbs up, a little prayer hands bow or smile and nod. You can always reply in the chat section too with Thank you and an emoji. Or take it a step further and thank the complimenter on teams/slack to show your appreciation and give a compliment to the kudos program.

We do it for specific reasons, but we’ve always given verbal and/or written recognition for accomplishments on our project in front of leadership. Sometimes people ping me a thanks, but I don’t expect anything back for recognizing someone for their hard work or accomplishments. The work they did is more than enough.

"I appreciate that. I worked very hard on that project."

Say “nice to hear”. Get some counseling regarding your inability to take a compliment if you need to.

There’s no reason you have to put up with a job you hate. I spent many years working in a toxic environment with a boss who gossiped and lead through fear. He wasn’t really much of a leader but basically a foreman. And he could make my existence miserable. I admit that it wasn’t easy to find another job but the bottom line is: trust your guts. If you feel something is wrong it’s because it probably is. Don’t second guess yourself. Look for options and and fight for your mental health.

What you should do when dealing with a very toxic worker that keep on sending passive aggressive messages to you as well as in group chat and email.
Things like when you answer his question he respond: I know that
Or when he keeps on saying my change requests were just minor in group meeting but actually not.
And keep on saying how hard he works when he clearly wasn’t and already underperformed compared to an intern level.

How to not let this toxic co-worker not poison me any further?

The job itself sounds pretty interesting. Lots of opportunity for growth (eventually will build out a team).

My only concern is the hiring manager. I talked to someone in my network who has worked with him in the past and she told me that she would 100% work with him again bc she learned a lot, but that he has a very dominant personality and that some ppl can butt heads with him.
