My lifelong dream is to take extended time off from work and spend it traveling Europe. I think I’m finally at the point I could pull it off this year, but I’m wondering what would look better for my career. Should I request an extended leave from my current company and return in 3 months? Or should I just put in my notice and find a new job when I get back? I’m not terribly in love with my job but don’t hate it either. Just don’t want to tank my career.

I freelanced remotely and travelled europe for years. Does something like the digital nomad life appeal to you? It's weird to suggest someone give up their job in a market as bad as this, but if you want to travel, that would be my advice. You don't want to find yourself limited by a return date.

Sure take time off just don’t come Back!

I'd request the extended leave. If they grant it, you won't have to stress about finding a job when you get back or explain to an interviewer that you bailed on your old job to go adventuring. It's a lot easier to find a job when you have a job, so even though you're lukewarm on yours, I'd recommend trying to find a way to hold onto it at least until you get back.

Enjoy

Oh, how fun!! That would be a dream!! Have fun whatever you choose!

Could you put in a notice and then look for another job when you get back? Enjoy the trip!

Question for folks with second homes: Considering buying a vacation home but would be primarily for family use. We currently have a primary residence with a mortgage balance of ~640K, so my understanding is I could only deduct the mortgage interest on 110K of the second mortgage to stay under the 750K cap. If I were to buy the second home through an LLC, would that allow me to exceed that 750K since the expenses of the second home would be pass through expenses/income?
