I freelanced remotely and travelled europe for years. Does something like the digital nomad life appeal to you? It's weird to suggest someone give up their job in a market as bad as this, but if you want to travel, that would be my advice. You don't want to find yourself limited by a return date.
Sure take time off just don’t come Back!
I'd request the extended leave. If they grant it, you won't have to stress about finding a job when you get back or explain to an interviewer that you bailed on your old job to go adventuring. It's a lot easier to find a job when you have a job, so even though you're lukewarm on yours, I'd recommend trying to find a way to hold onto it at least until you get back.

Could you put in a notice and then look for another job when you get back? Enjoy the trip!
