My secretary and my supervisor don’t care for each other and I’d appreciate any advice on how to navigate this.

For context, my secretary has been at my job for 11+ years & my supervisor has been there for 20+ years. I’ve only been there for 2 years. Both of them are older white women in their early 70’s. I’m 36 & have been an attorney for 8 years. I don’t know what if anything happened before I started but I can tell there’s some beef. (con‘t in comments)

I would really just try to remove yourself from being in the middle and let them hash it out. At the end of the day we are all adults and they are too big and grown to be acting that way in the workplace. I would definitely recommend staying as far out of it as you can.

This is so inappropriate for a SECRETARY

my guess is if you document her (especially outrageous bullshit like that ) and get it to your supervisor and HR, so you can get a different secretary and she can get out of the organization - that would be the way to go

Supervisor trumps secretary

I don’t want to get caught up in office politics. I just want to do my job and keep it moving. When it comes to power dynamics, I’m used to being the powerless employee at the bottom or the powerful lawyer at the top. I’ve never been in the middle before. With them both being older white women, that makes it even harder to navigate because I don’t know who to trust

DO NOT trust either of them

Are you Just venting (which is fine of course)? Or do you have a question?

Thanks for responding. I’m asking for advice on how to navigate my situation. I just don’t want anything to fall back on me because I’m in the middle.

I cover myself by following up on discussions with emails to make sure there’s a paper trail. I try to communicate clearly but my secretary is passive aggressive so any advice on dealing with passive aggressive people would be appreciated too

Working at a company and they can’t seem to hold on to their female, black and people of color employees. I blinked and 3 of the people who were in my onboarding class were either fired or they left. How often do you respond to emails from law students who want to learn about your firm/practice area? I get like a dozen requests right around OCI every year. There are many reasons why people in the working world are not direct when speaking. They are one of the following:

* They pretend they are experts
* They are inexperienced
* They are full of themselves
* They don't know what they are looking for
* They love to talk

Even if these people have good intentions, be careful of them. Your time is valuable, and the best thing for you to do is to be direct back at them.

Really looking for a way to turn around a toxic building culture with staff to staff bullying, cliques/social isolation, hard feelings on big topics (racism, non acceptance of gender identity). Last year the staff polarized with the lead bully whom I helped leave. And the lead gossip (who was my secretary) that gained their sympathy and turned them against me. She also left. Now I need to regain trust and eliminate unacceptable teacher behaviors. Open to any and all advice.

I had already told him monetary awards were not necessary as the "thank-you" and words of appreciation were enough for me.

Is it normal to receive such large monetary awards? I think 50~100 is acceptable
