Yes, it’s normal, it’s both a technical as well as a team/culture fit round.
Not surprising. I've gone from:
1: HR/Recruiter phone interview
2: To a peer group meeting interview
3: To a hiring manager interview before.
Or where 2 and 3 are swapped and I meet with the hiring manager first, then a peer group.
More likely, the peer group is either to check out how tech savvy or a cultural fit you would be. Likely that the hiring manager is looking for red flags.
Most non-technical roles, typically, it’s the second round. But here’s some reasons why it might be at the latter stage with the HM:
-> They’re busy. Pressing timelines.
-> Want to only meet with candidates who are closer to the end of the interview process.
-> They’re away. It typically this time of year kids start school, etc.
