United did this for me and about 10 fellow passengers connecting through Tokyo recently. Saved countless hours and a headache for us for sure.
It’s innovation for sure. Let’s not call this them being nice though. Clearly it’s saving dollars somewhere or these cheap ass airlines wouldn’t do it.

Ill never understand why this wasn’t something already done by all airlines. Running a business shouldn’t interfere with being able to be a decent human.
It impacts on time metrics
It may impacts the next flights arrival to the gate
May impact overtime and labor hours if towards end of a shift for a dozen crew working that flight
There are many inputs (enhanced customer experience also being one). They are able to program what to consider or not. Right now they are still very conservative. They claim average delay if 3 minutes. Why not 10? Why not 15? Because it impacts other passengers and cost.
