If you want to play the travel hacking game, you always start with Chase. They have one of the most restrictive rules with 5/24, and that dictates your card path. You can always get an Amex later, but your ability to open Chase cards may close in the future.
Think it also depends on what other credit cards you have. IMO, if you already have another travel card, then gold card gets better food benefits, but if you’re looking for a travel and foodie card, then CSP would be better.
FWIW I just signed up for the gold card because I’m building up MR points right now.
If you’re okay with putting travel on either your travel cards or his SW, there’s a 90K referral SUB for the gold card right now and would lean towards that. I got my referral by asking if anyone had a 90K referral here and someone DM’d me theirs.
For travel, I use Capital One Venture X. DM for referral if interested.
Great sign on referral promo right now, also get back $300 in statement credits for flights per year + $100 in points each year along with travel benefits like trip delay or cancellation protection, cell phone protection, price drop protection, luggage reimbursement, free lounge access, Hertz status, etc.
10x on hotels, 5x on flights, 2x on everything else $395 annual fee - get back $400 in statement credits plus additional benefits each year
For dining, groceries, and food, I use Amex Gold for the 4x points. However, I’m personally finding more use of my Venture X than Gold since I don’t eat out as much as I used to. May cancel Gold after a year has passed.
If I was to do it all over, I would get Venture X for travel and Savor One for 3% on all dining (which has no annual fee)
Amex Blue Cash Preferred might be worth a look if you’re spending mainly on groceries. 6% cash back with $95 annual fee, doesn’t take much effort to get your money back for the annual fee. Plus some other cash back areas if you want more than the 2x points from the Venture X from those.
CSP allows you to transfer your UR points to SW. If you you both fly SW a lot, then this could be for valuable (for your situation).
I’ll refer you if you want the AMEX!
Rising Star
Highest Amex Gold offer is 75k + 20% back up to $250 public or 90k targeted
If eating out a lot, I highly suggest amex gold.
I should eat less. But yeah. I get it. 😃
