You’re halfway there. At some point, you’re going to realize that it’s not the resulting agency that you really don’t wanna work for any longer, it’s the industry itself.
Not typically, no.
In this recent IPG/OMC layoff the following occurred:
- redundant roles such as talent acquisition were culled
- high paid duplicative management levels were removed
- low performance or employee issues were “scapegoated” into the layoff, where billable or individual contributors may have been laid off
- whole companies closed or reshaped because their work isn’t considered needed anymore
- there truly was no billable work for the IC, but then it goes back to performance
Seeing as you’re an art director, if you are looking to save another Art Director, it’s likely that they were laid off for a performance consideration more than the other items listed.
I do not think this layoff was focused on removing people with bill-ability such as when Pfizer fled IPG to Publicis because there wasn’t enough billing to go around. This was more clearly about things Omnicom felt they didn’t need or want anymore. Like a Toy Story skit.
Sad. This is why monopolies are bad.
The only “performance” these layoffs had to do with was stock performance. JW promised Wall Street $750M in savings. Managers were given a number and they had to meet that number. That translates into a lot of “innocent” casualties.
I feel the exact same way. I also live 63 miles from an office and refuse to spend 12 hours (about 2hrs each way) a week commuting. I sincerely wish I was able to save someone else’s job. My severance would be pennies so that doesn’t even make a difference for me
What HR?
