I wish I could say I was surprised, lol. Companies want to get the most they possibly can out of their employees to the point of being ridiculous. They want one employee to do the work of two or more.
I think I'd say, sure, you can call me, but I won't be answering. Seriously, if it's a good job, and they deal with things on an emergency basis at times, that's not an entirely unreasonable question. But if they aren't dealing with 24/7 crisis management, they need to respect boundaries.
If I don’t control variables like timing, then I can take my own counsel as to what “success” is.
As you progress in your career in the PR industry, you should expect to get weekend calls during times of crisis or challenge, drawing the line for routine events. I would not be happy as the PR lead not to be included in high-level conversations that happen when challenges occur.
I think in our field there has to be some level of expectation we can be reached from time to time after hours or on a weekend. And I'm very willing to do so when needed or when in a pinch.
But when it starts happening routinely... that is when it is a problem and is a sign of bigger issues at the firm.
I had a partner at my firm who always asked a similar question, but your parents were in town too. If you answered yes, he’d say something like, I hope we never have to and you’d get the job. If you answered no, you were not.
I always thought this was terrible leadership bc it made his team expect that sort of responsiveness from other teams ran by other partners.
He had a successful team but no one wanted to work with his team so they were often overworked and the turnover was high.
Fear mongering.
