Observations on in house hiring - companies are very picky right now and will disregard anyone who isn’t a clear fit, and they’ll prioritize internal referrals. 90% of candidates right now have no shot, with a large percentage of those applicants not even possessing the basic qualifications for the role. If you’re a competitive candidate it’s a great market for you. If not, not so much.

As a person who formerly hired for in house legal roles, the 90% figure is incredibly inflated. If we could find 3 people out of 100 resumes who, on paper, were qualified, it was a miracle. I can guarantee that far less than 10% possessed the basic qualifications for any role that I had.

"If you’re a competitive candidate it’s a great market for you. If not, not so much."

Did you just say that people who are qualified for jobs are more likely to get a job? Damn that is an insightful observation.

likefunny

No. In the past even weak candidates could get an interview. Right now that’s not the case. The market is exceptionally tough right now and competitive candidates are few and far between.

Seems like that’s the rule, always.

I’ve noticed on Glassdoor, salaries for my level (Director) are higher than my base but have similar bonus opportunity. At what level of pay gap would you push or make a stink? In hindsight I should have pushed more during the hiring process. At 160k base now, seeing ranges in the 170s to low 180s. These are specific to my current company.

I’m struggling at the moment to gauge how much I should be getting paid in my position as i feel I’m heavily underpaid for the work I do, which includes managing digital marketing operations across 12+ countries, manage the studio/creatives plus lead on any campaigns and strategies, etc. I’m also remote UK-based although my company is international. So what do you feel a fair UK wage would be for the role? I love my job/team but the stress isn’t worth it for me atm. Thanks in advance!

I'm a third year plaintiff's employment law attorney and I'm looking to move to defense, preferably still in employment law. I received an offer from a midsize firm that primarily focuses on PI with little-to-no employment law practice, so I'll have a bit of a learning curve. Offer is $90k, billable hours of 2100. Is this reasonable? I'm dead-set on leaving my current job, and this would be a $20k pay increase - which makes me believe I'm leaning towards taking it for those reasons only.
