We waited until they were 12 and in middle school. With activities after school it was essential at that point for communication purposes.
We also just got them a Motorola prepaid through Verizon which cost about $200-300. The plan ends up being $25-30 a month with unlimited data. It was cheap enough to replace if lost or damaged, but good enough to use various apps.
We also added a location tracker app (Life360) and parental controls app (Qustodio) that we could use to limit time and see what they use/download.
Also check our Gabb wireless, I’ve heard good things about them and they’re on my list to check out when my kids are old enough.
We have Google Fitbit Ace LTE. It has options to track location, talk and text and it is very accurate and provides basic functions needed for kids.
Phones when they started junior high
My daughter was 13 or 7rh grade. No social media, she does have instagram now after a year. She has a contract with us. We can check the phone at any time and do. She did lose phone privileges for a month due to a rule violation. For the 10 year old it's a hard no. mine will get his at 13. age has its privileges and life's not fair.
After 5 th grade. My kids are fully addicted to their phones, this is the most unbreakable bond in their lives.
Frankly, I'm exactly the same, so ?
