Go ski Alta, SLC was hella boring and christmas day town is probably totally closed
Unless you want to visit the tabernacle and get a hard sell from the Mormons - definitely recommend getting in another day of skiing instead. Personally would go bird over Alta but both are excellent and will likely have better snow than the park city mountains.
People here have clearly never been to SLC or PC. PC is so touristy now that a lot of things will be open on xmas for the tourists. It’s only 45 mins from SLC so it’s not like you have to leave PC to get to the airport in time or something (like CO resorts that are all fairly far from Denver). If you want another day of skiing you can go to the cottonwood resorts on the SLC side of the mountain. These slopes are significantly harder! Brighton is where a lot of locals go to get away from the PC or even Alta tourists. Just keep in mind that the cottonwood side doesn’t have a village the way PC does. Regardless of what SM1 says, Temple Square is very pretty with xmas lights and there’s a really nice mall just across the way. If you bundle up, there are also a lot of small hikes in SLC,like Neff that won’t completely be snowed out. A lot of the chain restaurants will likely be open (and there are some nicer ones, not just Olive Garden), SLC is pretty secular now with lots of non-Mormons living there.
Y’all are helpful. See my longer post below for clarification and I appreciate more feedback to fine tune things.
Thanks for the info so far fishies. Here’s where our brain is presently: 1. We are set on PC because we have Epic. 2. The condo we booked in PC for 5 nights is only available thru the 24th. 3. It’s significantly less expensive to fly home the 25th vs staying two more nights for another day on the slopes (much as more skiing would be optimal). So… we will check out and ski all day on 24th, drive back late that day to SLC, use points for one night staying in SLC, and probably take a mid afternoon flight out of SLC Xmas day. And for the trip going out there: the question is, do we spend any time exploring SLC or just go straight to PC?
Go to temple square that one night you’re in SLC and I think you have most of the sights covered. It’s not really a touristy city unless you’re going hiking, and in December the weathers not really ideal for that. Not sure if they are open or not, but highly suggest log haven for an xmassy ambiance if you’re doing dinner in SLC Christmas Eve before you fly out. I also really like the avenues, not to sight see but lots of cute restaurants there. Check to see if they are open or not, cause most of those are independently owned. My favorites in that area are Wildwood and avenues proper. Stop by the Iceberg for a malt for dessert!
Where would people suggest staying Christmas Eve in SLC? Probably would use Marriott or Hilton points. Guessing downtown but what is parking situation and will it be a mob scene around the Mormon temple thus parking challenges? What’s the best place for brunch or lunch on Christmas Day ? Our flight home will be around 5pm.
There is a radisson within walking distance to temple square. There’s also a kimpton Monaco. I don’t think it’ll be too bad down there since Mormons don’t do the equivalent of xmas mass and it’s a big at home with family night, and if you’re walking distance then you won’t need to deal with parking. As for brunch, not sure what will be open on xmas day, but I really like Ruth’s diner in emigration canyon, sweet lake, and avenues proper.
