Just say “no” or that you have a prior personal commitment. Those obligatory social event things are always awkward. I can appreciate a company looking to make things more open and welcoming and build morale (and a nice dinner is always a good thing) but I’m old school and prefer to keep my work and personal lives as separate as possible.
The only thank you I expect (or really want, to be honest) is the one that I get every other Friday. When you get right down to it, any company will lay you off as soon as look at you the instant they think they can save money by doing so. They’re not your buddy and you’re not theirs. Never forget that.
Sage advice
Use a SO or a dog as an excuse if you don’t have one, say that you do who cares haha
Call it overtime. Guaranteed to be abolished.
If it isn’t paid, I don’t go unless it’s a Friday and I’m interested. All our events are highly encouraged but optional. At least they are infrequent and everyone gets a free drink.
