Our company insists we do monthly after-work "team bonding" outings. They're always awkward and no one actually enjoys them. How do you get out of this stuff?

I learned that I unknowingly helped my coworker with a personal problem, and it made remember that even a short conversation can make all the difference.

Any one works in a one man / one woman tax department? How do you effectively manage the relationships with outside tax providers, and with accounting/finance department inside of the company? I have multiple weekly calls with different teams from our CPA firm, with accounting/finance team inside, I tend to address issues as they arise.
