Hi fishes! I volunteer with The Art of Good, a creative collective helping small businesses affected by the pandemic. They are seeking a little help from a media professional. Need an SEM POV for a small business looking to change their name and relaunch their brand. This is non-paid. More about giving back while in-between gigs. :) If you can help out or want to learn more, please reach out to me via LinkedIN. Thank you!! www.linkedin.com/in/karenkohn/

If you adopt, it’s much cheaper than buying. 😊

C3- my comment was erroneously directed at SAD1; I was referring to AC, and apologize for the confusion.
I have no guilt in re: dogs. I do regret my posting error on this thread.
More importantly, you need to have time to take care of an pet. Dogs needs walks and lots of attention. Cats are more independent, but if you’re out a lot or travel, it’s not fair to any animal.
Maybe you should foster to see if it’s the right choice for you.
Broke grad student, so my income was technically negative 🤣... but I volunteered at a shelter, and got discounts on vet care there which was pretty awesome. Also got inside scoop on pets coming up for adoption--eventually adopted my (purebreed, btw) heart dog from there
82k!
Like $30K 10.5 years ago and adopting him was the best decision I’ve ever made. The old guy is sleeping at my feet right now. He’s the sweetest guy ever. I just went to the SPCA and there he was. I knew he was mine the moment I saw him. I adopted another do 6 years later and it was the same when I saw her, I just knew. She keeps my old guy young and all of us on our toes. I’m at a position now where it’s easier financially but I wouldn’t trade them or when I got them for anything.
130k and couldn’t imagine making less and having my dog. I was freelancing at the time when I got her so making even more. She was a rescue and still the adoption fees totaled to $800. That doesn’t count having to get her RE-vaccinated because they said she was all taken care of when she really only had had one round of her vaccines. Then when you add in the dog trainer, food, supplies, emergency vet bills when they eat a dead fucking rat….. it’s a lot. I wouldn’t trade her for the world, but it’d be so hard to care for her with less.
55k. dog. manhattan. shared an apt.
Very little, I was a waitress (and then a broke grad student). It’s doable even without making much. Definitely get pet insurance, though - surprise vet bills can quickly drain your emergency fund.
We had a total income of $80k ish when we adopted our dog. Most of the up-front expenses were for vet visits and supplies (food, bed, proper leash). We spent a little more on training because she is a difficult breed but there are definitely plenty of cost-saving ways to train a dog as long as you have the time and patience.
As for illnesses and emergency vet visits, that happens to both adopted and bought animals. I personally would always adopt, don’t shop. If you want a specific breed, I echo the advice above to inquire at breed-specific organizations! They’re also an incredible resource for all things related to that breed, which is super helpful if you’ve never had it before.
I took over the care of my family cat when I went to college. Brought her with me.
Money is not generally a huge barrier to owning a cat or dog unless your dirt poor. You are in this industry so you are not dirt poor. I mean do you want a pet?
Will say this. With the amount I traveled for production I did feel bad having to leave the dog at home. But I made it work
Negative $30k. I was a grad student.
