Cushman & Wakefield Interested in a Sales Associate position at Cushman & Wakefield. I have experience as a government analyst for 7 years but nothing related to commercial real estate. I want to become a more competitive applicant but not sure where to start. Are there any certificates, skills, or knowledge that I should be learning in my free time?

I’m in almost the EXACT same position (except for the actual job offer - so far I have not progressed past initial exploratory chats). It’s very daunting to think of leaving, especially when you only know how it’s done in one firm and you’re part of the furniture there and have deep ties, including senior partners who have your back.
One of my former partners left to head up a new IA practice at a top US firm, and even with their excellent profile, network and client base, they told me it’s been so much tougher than they ever imagined. Getting in profitable IA work at a big firm is becoming harder and harder as rates keep skyrocketing and more well-known practitioners are starting smaller boutiques where they can be much more flexible on rates.
On top of all of that, unless you know someone who already works there - you will never know if what they’re telling you during the interview process is true… everyone will always say they are collegiate in terms of hunting for work and have a great culture, but you will never truly know if the grass is actually greener once you get there.
That said, it’s a gamble but gambles can also pay off!
I was at my first BL firm 15 years before lateraling as a partner to another BL firm, where I was 13 years before lateraling again as a partner to a smaller firm, where I’ve now been almost 5 years. No regrets with either move because I was much happier (even 5 years at new firm). While I moved principally for non-monetary reasons, compensation more than doubled with each move. I evaluated the push and pull factors for each move and the answer was clear - and hence no regrets.
If happy, I would not move for just 25% increase in compensation. Every move entails risks and the grass is not always greener on the other side.
