I am finishing up my second year of practice as a lawyer. I transitioned to plaintiffs pi work from a boutique commercial litigation firm. I like the work and not having to bill. The issue I am having is managing volume. I have about 150 active files some pre-lit and the rest are in litigation. Cases range in value from very small to low six figures. I also take the driver seat for the grunt work on the firms bigger cases which are at or near 7 figure value. I constantly feel (cont.)

I’m a 3rd year Associate at a fairly large injury firm. In my 2nd year my individual fees were $550k, this year I’ll eclipse $800k and next year I have $1.5mm or more lined up. (That’s just cases I signed/closed myself)
I’m the sole associate in the office, and also handle most of the training/marketing/networking in my office. My salary isn’t 6 figures and no performance incentive. At what point is it fair to ask/is it unrealistic or unreasonable to ask for some small performance incentive?

Are there many legitimate ethical hurdles when switching from insurance defense to plaintiff’s work? I’ve always seen myself as a plaintiff’s lawyer, but ultimately took an ID job out of law school (better salary, no real opportunities at plaintiffs firms that I liked). In house or M&A/Real Estate Transactional are likely the end goal but want to get the litigation out of me first.
