Hotel Del Coronado in SD. Would avoid Florida for both the hurricanes and weather this time of year.
It looks really nice but so far out of my budget 😅
Florida > California
Yea for the beach this is correct. The beaches in California are not for swimming in. They are mostly yuck and cold.
For beach in August: cape cod, Rhode Island, Hamptons, new Jersey. This is basically the only thing the northeast was made for. Florida is terrible idea, and San Diego is awesome but not for actually being in the water — too cold. If you want a total surfer dude spot in SoCal, stay in hermosa beach. It’s a vibe.

Definitely avoid Florida during hurricane seasons, you won't know if it will come to your area or not until the last few days before landing. If it comes, you may not know where it will go. Evacuation will be nightmare if you're not locals.
Wait until late November after everything chills.
I’m from Florida and live in California and Florida will be miserably hot this time of year plus kids are out of school and are an annoyance at the beach (and hurricanes are a possibility). But the ocean in California is too cold for me to actually want to swim to be honest. If you want to get in the water and not just lay on the beach and wade in up to your thighs go somewhere in the Orange County/San Diego area. Unless you’re used to swimming in cold water or surfing. And choose a hotel with a heated pool because the ocean is still pretty cold.
Hurricanes are mostly active end of August through early November in Florida. If you go early August you’ll be fine but it is HOT. On gulf coast of Florida this weekend water temps were almost 90 and outside temps feel like 100 with humidity. East coast beaches are a bit cooler but more waves.
