Recruiters are like real estate agents: most are mid to terrible, but some are truly great and will make the entire lateral process much smoother, so I wouldn’t dismiss them out of hand.

You’ll want an updated resume, a one-page deal sheet and your law school transcript. Would highly recommend using a recruiter (I can recommend a good one if you DM me), but also leverage your law school/personal network to direct-apply to firms where you have an in. Just make sure a recruiter does not also submit you to those firms. Good luck!
Stanford also has sample resumes and deal sheets: https://law.stanford.edu/careers/alumni-career-resources/sample-lateral-application-materials/#slsnav-resumes
If you are concerned that we are scammy (sure, I get the criticism) ask someone you know who lateraled for a recommendation. We are more helpful than crowdsourcing lateral info from anonymous strangers online.
Recruiters operate in plenty of industries as employers can’t always count on the best talent finding them. In professional service industries especially, having top performers really matters to the bottom line. You are welcome to go it alone, but good recruiters are a free service to you and can help in many ways (resume crafting, interview prep, industry knowledge, recommendations of where to apply based on your short and long term goals, negotiation, quasi-therapist, etc). Plus, we save you the time of having to do the job search your self. Whatever you want to compare us with, plenty of associates have good experiences with our services. The sway part is limited as we can’t get a firm to hire someone they don’t deem qualified but we can help with getting interviews on borderline cases, with an extra push to get you in the door. Anyway, I wish you the best of luck on your search.
Class of 2023 I would rely on old law school classmates to submit your resume to their law firm/practice group head. That was how I lateraled as a 3rd year and process moved quickly bc that classmate vouched for me.
If you can get internal referrals you should. Cheaper for the firm and good to have someone vouching for you

I lateraled third year and used Andrew Merson and was extremely happy with him
