"I notice the ranges are quite large still so I never know." That's by design. It allows them to remain technically compliant with the laws without giving away too much info. This isn't in place in my state, so I try to ascertain budget for the role during the initial interview or call to see if it's worth my time.
It’s so frustrating but yes agree usually it’s the first round with HR where you can learn a bit more
In some US states and cities it's legally required to post salary ranges. And, of course, the companies follow the law in the most passive aggressive way possible, posting ranges that are so broad they mean nothing. The top of those ranges are always out of reach, and just there to impress people. The lower middle would be the most realistic numbers.
