Received an offer as Engagement Director from Salesforce (CSG, pre sales, L9). Great benefits package, 40% increase in total comp and better WLB.
I do love the people in my practice and current client, but career trajectory has stalled after taking parental leave earlier this year and (yet another) change in leadership.
Realistically, making to Director is 2-3 years away and will require sacrificing time with my family that I am not prepared to give up.
Should I stay or should I go?

Downshifts happen because we 1. Pay a lot more than consulting does, and 2. Have way fewer leadership roles in our organizations.
People can't jump into the same level because those levels just don't exist. I'm a level 6, roughly an engagement manager in responsibility, and have only 6 org levels between me and Jeff. FAANGs just don't have enough org levels to give everyone a fancy title like MBB does.
That said, I get paid more than a principal, with TC just shy of a first year partner, and have much more decision making authority than I ever did in consulting, so I'm happy as a clam.

Maybe at your firm, but at mine they were more like 5-6
I don’t think it is a step down. From my understanding, Director at Google is level 8 and pretty high up there. Only P/MD with specific domain skills are hired at that level. P should match to L7 or sometimes L6 (this is a really big band). As you probably know, titles don’t really matter in tech but levels do. Getting through interviews will likely be very difficult though since you don’t have domaine knowledge. Sometimes recruiters could be clueless but I found G recruiters to be well above average.
Coming back to Google PM. It seems it will be around $400k but recruiter says it will be negotiated after the interview if at all. They do not want me to come as GPM.

Then they lowballin you bro, you should clear 600k at L7 easy
My client at Google, a director, was an ex-McK partner. Coming in as a director may be a stretch.
How do you justify applying for a product role when you have no experience in being a product manager?
OP said recruiter reached out to him
Could you share the salary you were offered (or an approximate range) for this specific position at Google?
Do you have the technical skills for a product manager?
Director is too far. Is it an exciting enough role for me to reinvent myself by learning tech architecture and tech design trade-offs in more detail. I will do it if it makes sense.
Coming in a as an L8 is definitely a stretch.
From what I’ve heard, the typical equivalent is
PL1 L5
PL2 L5 / L6 if in cusp of promo to Pr
Pr1-Pr2 L6
P1-P2 L7
MDP L8 (maybe)
But the above are for BizOps, so may be one level down on the tech ladder.
3) require deep technical skills that I do not have.
Is it worth exploring?
How about program manager at google?
In my experience, you dont need to have engineering level technical knowledge to be a technology product manager. You just need to have a customer focused and value driven mindset. You also need be able to collaborate effectively with software developers, test engineers, trainers, business leaders, and other stakeholders to move a product from design/requirements to implementation.
Typically each of these teams are offering their unique input to eachother, passing the ball back and forth, fine tuning the product along the way.
Its a highly collaborative team sport and the product owner is like the coach.
U really just need to keep customer experience forefront in your mind and constantly ask if doing it this way or that way will generate the highest possible value. There’s always a million possible items that could be in scope. What is the priority? Typically ones that bring highest value to customers or the business.
Senior Product Mgr is a step down. Ask for Director role..

Yeah interview for director level they will level you down to Sr or GPM..
I had an offer for L6 at at Amazon 3 years back when I was a PL. I also had 10 years of pre MBA experience. The all in compensation was $230k. So I did not join AMZN. I am surprised somebody is getting $600k+ at same level. Based on my knowledge even L7 non-tech roles offer all-in at around $350-$400k. FYI. My spouse works at AMZN as well.
Got it. Your situation is different as stock appreciation and commissions are hard to model when accepting a position.
