Ouch. When I was inhouse, I had great benefits, but not so much now I am back in a firm.
This is so important! Many don’t consider this. My firm pays for our insurance and when people leave, they don’t consider that. My prior firm was $1600/mo for insurance for my family.
With a $25k raise, you can afford it. I just lateraled to a new role that made me take a $6k pay cut and I've got to go on obamacare.
Unfortunately, the small/midsized firms in my area typically don't offer insurance. I think it's insane and borderline criminal but I'm not in a position to do anything about it. But I'm hoping that I'll get the experience I need and I'll be able to lateral in house in a few years so insurance won't be an issue going forward.
I was so pissed when I lateralled to a litigation boutique for a 30k cut and then when I got there realized I had even less benefits. The things we learn when we lateral for the first time…
Also good advice for govt attorneys looking to go private. In our state, prosecutors and PDs would have to make $25k-$30k more to break even when factoring in insurance benefits
Yes, that was the break even range for me when I moved back to big law from inhouse at a systematically important financial institution.
Lame!!
