People seem to forget what Memorial Day is really all about. Many think it's just Veterans Day in the Springtime. This day is for those who died on foreign fields and in senseless battles at home because their country told them to. Many died in wars they did not believe this nation should fight, but they did their duty while others gamed the system, paying doctors to fabricate medical conditions (bone spurs, anyone?) to avoid military service. We remember our military personnel who died at the Pentagon on Sept. 11, 2001. Memorial Day is not specifically meant for our first responders, but I believe those who died on that day in the terrorist attacks, and those who died in Oklahoma City on April 19, 1995 and at the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021 should be remembered today for their sacrifice at the hands of our nation's enemies.
Thank you for sharing. It is so important to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice. ❤️
I often think to how the holiday was originally called Decoration Day, and it began with people decorating the graves of fallen Union soldiers with spring flowers in the years following the Civil War. If you ever have the inclination, look for newspaper accounts about local observances from the late 1800s, it would often be something of a pageant in small towns as people would walk carrying bouquets to cemeteries. I recall reading some newspaper accounts which were quite touching, the observances were simple yet so meaningful.
I love that. I think the Civil War really scarred us in so many ways, in a way the observance of a Decoration Day which evolved into Memorial Day really helped our country to heal.
Thank you for sharing. Not only does our family honor our fallen patriots, but we also spend time visiting the graves of loved ones who have passed on. It's just a great day of remembrance of those who have come before.
