I would think it would be OK to begin by repeating the question, then saying something like, “I want to give you a specific response. Let me have a few seconds to gather my thoughts.”
On the other hand, the idea that they assumed you were cheating during a phone screen likely tells you something about the culture there.
I’m an in-house recruiter and not all of us are like what you’ve experienced. We take time to hear the candidate out and let them ask the tough questions. If it leads to more job-specific questions then I’ll defer them to the hiring manager during an interview. I let them know that my call with them is a screen and not an interview. I make them feel warm and welcomed. I’m sorry to hear that recruiter gave us a bad name, but we’re not all like that.
*Update- I received a candidate experience survey from the company. I will be nice, but also state that the experience was not good.
I think it is becoming common where we are coming across candidates who are using AI to answer questions. I think mentioning that you need a minute is a good response or acknowledging that you heard the question and thinking of the best answer for the question.
@Human Resources Director 1, you know Senior Recruiter 1 wasn't the actual recruiter, right? They're just answering the question.
I think we all agree the response was awful but using Ai in interviews is a recent challenge and we should all be figuring out how to spot it and address it. I completely disagree with how this recruiter went about it but for those interviewing, it is important to know it is being scrutinized. Companies can't afford to hire people who sound knowledgeable but don't actually know how to do the job. It has always happened, but with Ai, it will get much worse if we don't learn how to navigate it.
I am sorry to hear that happened to you. We are facing an ever-increasing threat from candidates using AI to answer questions, to totally fake candidates that are trying to get hire and steal IP, infect systems or just steal money from a company.
Are you hiring?
First off an interviewer should be polite throughout the conversation. A pleasant I am checking if you are still on the line would be a way to handle it. Telling you not to use AI is I think taking it over the line. Were you searching for the correct answer truthfully online or just needing a moment to say the right thing? As a person who interviews on occasion I can tell you that it would be concerning to me if you seemed like you were searching for answers versing just asking. If you thought the answer you were giving was wrong you could follow up with I’m not exactly sure or something that would reflect your willing to learn. See without knowing the question they asked it’s kind of hard to guide you the correct way to answer something.
The use of AI is increasing among candidates. In video interviews, some employers request candidates share their screens to ensure they aren't using AI to answer questions.
Since you mentioned that "The recruiter repeatedly interrupted," I wonder how long of a pause you took. What I would do is pause very, very briefly and ask a follow up, clarifying question to buy myself some time.
One of the many reasons I HATE recruiters!
thats wild.
It doesn’t make any sense to me why a recruiter would stick out their neck and say that. Just because they try to parent you, a candidate is going to do what they do. And after all, if they lie about their knowledge and skills, it will be found out soon enough.
That’s an awful experience! If they are that worried about AI, then bring the person in for an in person interview, It’s disappointing to hear that recruiters who come across real professionals think it’s automatically AI… some of us are just that good at our jobs!
