400k sounds dope for someone who’s 35
Close to 40... but yes it does sounds dope. First time exploring oops with tech and never has any stock options or rsu. So I am not sure how this will play out. That’s what I asked the people who went through this.. did they see their tc increase or are the recruiters just saying this to get me interested.
What team at EY? I think it’s more that <$200k is low for SM than $400k is high. We have SMs that make close if not more.
I get that.. I am sure I will do well at EY if I stick here for few years and will eventually get close to 400k. My question is not about my current role. I wants to understand the comp structure for tech companies and if people bonuses, rsu and refreshers are discussed during the interview process.
Mentor
In my experience Tech companies largely benchmark on MBB compensation rather than Big 4 compensation. $400K for 15 years of experience seems fair to me.
MBAs are often getting paid $200K and they have roughly 5-7 years of experience including time in school, so you seem to be underpaid more than anything else.
At MBB firms, $400K is around what they’d get after ~12 years of experience total, 2 years as C, 2 years at EM, 1-2 as AP.
Most of the AP’s from MBB we hire generally get flat comp rather than a raise.
What positions at Tech? Grass sounds greener outside the yellow border!
Cool! Whereabouts do you live?
Can confirm that base wd not be significantly different from consulting, and that RSUs/sign on will drive the difference when you move to tech.
Correct OP, can confirm that you get Refreshers every year. It's pretty standard along with bonus that could be higher than your standard amount if you perform well along with the company. However, 400k is not very common unless you are in a somewhat senior position, but close to 350k is. Also remember, our consulting YOE don't directly translate to tech YOE, so you will lose out on some years unless you do very similar work.
Yes viable. Why not. You have the skills and experience, you get your money's worth.
Thanks my friends. I am all in for making progress in life. I just want to hear from people who went through this in real life. Did they get bonuses as promised? Did rsu work out as planned?
Depends on the FAANG, example I’ve got friends at Apple that saw their TC double just from stock growth this year. I’ve got friends at Amazon that hate their job/culture but see similar money. Somewhere like FB is a bit more risky considering all the regulatory interest.
Exited with about 9-10yrs exp. Was downleveled as I grew quickly in consulting but liked the team so took the offer.
Went from about 190k TC to about 250k TC. Not a big jump but looking to see how a couple of years will play out. So far, so good. The lower base is a little annoying but overall happy.
I think switching at 15yrs is a great idea - you're coming in at a sweet spot in terms of comp and level. So good luck!
Same at Facebook, 25% per year
Honestly the interview process is quite long. It would be wise to focus on prep instead of comp as you have many hurdles to get over. You can also check levels.fyi for comp estimates once they tell you what level you're being considered for.
Speaking from experience btw as someone transitioning to FAANG now. Make it through the onsite then start worrying about comp
Agreed. Lots of inflated data points as well. See it as more of a range but not the norm
