One is job title, one is role on a particular case. It’s confusing but bear with me:
In our case teams there are a couple of standardised roles. There are always exceptions but generally:
- Senior Manager is a full time role and leads the team of 2-5 consultants. They own the full process and content
- Above the SM is typically the OVP. That’s typically 40% of someone’s time, and focused on client management and senior thought partner for the content development
As an Associate Partner (tenure) one can do either role on any given assignment. In the early stages of the tenure, an AP would often still do the SM role, while also starting to sell work. In the late stages, before the promotion to Partner, they would often do the OVP role on 1-2 cases at the same time.
What can make it confusing is that Senior Manager is both a tenure and a case team role. So generalist tenures are Manager - Senior Manager - Associate Partner - Partner.
So your friend probably in their early stages of the AP tenure, and currently doing the SM role on the project they are working on.
Thank you so much for this explanation! He did say that he was promoted to AP recently so this makes more sense now!
Gives me the ick that people get so wrapped up in the career title of a person they’re seeing.
Yes, to the point where they don’t even ask the guy to explain it further but create a post here
Very different from us low life types who don't work on "cases" - we only get to work on "projects" :)
Titles and roles in consulting are inconsistent across firms. I haven't been able to explain what I do to my parents so far
C1 - I just say I help companies solve their problems. My mom (bless her soul) used to say I just talk on the phone or work on my laptop. Unlike people who really work. 😂
You like the guy he make good money? Who care sometimes i tell i am Striper to my friends so it can be easier to explain
