This depends on the state/city.
In NYC hourly workers accrue “paid time off/sick time” via hours worked. You have to work a certain amount of hours for a certain amount of time and you accrue paid time off/sick time hours - maybe like for every 5 hours worked you get 1 hour of PTO/sick time. That is after having worked as an hourly employee for a certain amount of time for the same company. I call it paid time but it’s really for sick time - so you can protect yourself from not getting paid if you get sick. At previous agencies FLers who qualified for this were allowed to use the time for regular doctors appts as well.
In NYC this is to prevent sick workers from coming into work and getting others sick (applies to all industries so super helpful to have waiters or bartenders be able to stay home if they are sick for obvi reasons). But not really as vacation time - if a person wanted to take two weeks off for vacation they don’t get paid for that.
Of course you’d have to be on payroll for that benefit - if you’re working as a independent contractor then you’re likely not entitled to that- but I assume you’re on payroll.
How is the overtime policy? Can you take on more projects/assignments/responsibilities to get more hours in per week? Even 5- 10 OT hours will make a difference in the pay check and OT is the one good thing about being hourly.
Thank you for the advice/feedback!
This makes me feel guilty about NOT working on those normal holidays. I can barely make rent/gas/groceries as is.
