Just make it easy for them to say no if it doesn’t work out, so it doesn’t strain your relationship. Don’t add too much pressure or expectations basically. Say that there’s no hard feelings if you don’t get it.

Don't put your mentor in an awkward spot if there is no good role fit for you. Be upfront that you'd like an opportunity to work with them if it makes sense for the business but it's no obligation. Ask once/twice but drop the subject if they don't recriprocate.
I would just float out the suggestion in a way that doesn’t require a yes or no back. Like “hey, would love to be considered for a position if one ever opens up on your team. I really loved working with you. Also hope you’re well!”
