Ask what you need for the role not for what you need for your ego

Oh well, so just because you know DSA and someone else doesn't, you're more qualified and the other one is not.
Wow.
There are a lot of things to boast about, well unfortunately knowledge of DSA isn't one of them (unless you're telling it to college students on LinkedIn,which you're not).
You are not conducting competive exam.. You have to check that person can work or not.. Even if they answered all the ds question.. Will you cerifiy that person is suitable for your project???
Just change your attitude... I have interviewed more than 100 people, most of the people those who theritically answered not performed well in my project.. But I gave opportunity for the people those who are have good learning attitude.. They performed well most of the time
I feel for that person those attented interview with you.
I if they doesn't know the topic don't think they are not good in technical..
You will understand the pain when you go for interview..
Interview should be knowledge transition session not a session for showing attitude..
People like you have ruined our education system. There will be zero need of something in practical use but to be deemed fit for it you have to give exams on those . Pathetic mindset. If your project uses DSA on day to day basis I am pretty sure it’s redundant. Anyone with a good learning attitude can pick it up in few days and be productive. Good luck picking some to the book candidates.
Can you solve some DSA problems if I test you?
Some one who has never practiced DSA.. May find it difficult.. But tht no way means that candidate is not good at coding or aptitude. And the candidate is right.. Unless you want him to device a new low level algorithm, most of the time we dnt even need in practical life.
And they are already available in languages and framework.. Abstracted so we can concentrate on business functionality.
Disclosure: I hv good ranking in various code competency platform.
Truth is
The interview is for a product company by the way, one of the network giants. we use many of the dsa concepts in day to day coding .Please don't get offended for the post, I know most service companies doesn't demand DSA. Don't jump into conclusion, But as an engineer we need to have knowledge of DSA..Basics must be intact. That's what most of the product companies looks for.
Well many engines are joining as HR or in Finance or other domains that too in product based. So being an engineer where he will use DSA in HR or Finance. The information is freely available in internet so he can Google it and use it why he need to even remember that. In any product based company, coding comes as support function, it is used only to enhance the products function.
Don't get offended folks. I assume most of the people who had replied doesn't work with C/C++/Networks. Try to get a offer from companies like Cisco or Goldman Sachs without DSA. Then your comments are valid here. All the interviewers here will hit you with same DSA.
And Yes even I changed the company recently and even as a 10+ year experienced candidate, I had to answer questions about DSA, OS fundamentals etc.
Microsoft, VMware, Nvidea, Nutanix etc..all of them had multiple rounds and yes they were asking about the same DSA in evey round. If we go according the comment sections here , do all of the interviewers in these companies have lot of ego issues??? No ofcourse and that's why they are working for such companies.
Pro
Just like DSA gives an optimal solution, use of optimal words drives relevant reaction. Read your post and try to see if it was constructive or u know. Be humble
DSA rounds check candidate's problem solving skills. And through that coding skills too. They might not be the best way to interview someone but there is no better alternate. In addition to coding rounds, there are design rounds to check how well you build scalable, performant systems. Hiring manager rounds check candidate's experience and delve into details of projects they did including high level design/architecture.
Not sure what else could be asked in an interview. You can't ask someone to work on an actual project in the time available. Some companies do ask to build a small app/solution in 3 hours but that would cover limited cases. For instance, that would tell me nothing about how well you design distributed systems
Good one bro..👍👍👍
Dear Author, interview me to tmhari beijati hui yaha to bacha lete...😂
Dear Author, have u used tree and linkedlists in ur project?
Before setting up a interview sort the candidates who are strong knowledge on dsa...ask ur hr to screen properly ...instead of showing off here ....there are many ppl who r earning more without knowing dsa which r having background from mechanical telecom it branch
Bas iss author jaise logon se door rehna h zindagi mein 😄😄
true
With that mindset, you should probably have your own start up by now. Stop taking interviews on behalf of companies, you deserve much better and so do others whom you are interviewing🙏🙏..apka gyan bhut bad chuka hai isse achi jagah lagaye..roots apki hadd se zyada strong ho gyi hai aap khud tree ban jayiye..😌
Author is correct, service based companies doesn't care about quality solutions or providing solution at scale as a result people working there also doesn't care.
Product based companies provides solutions which are used my thousands or millions of people or may be even more. Thats where all these things matters, things are difficult to work there.
If we will go with what people are saying in comments then everyone will get selected, there needs to be some critieria and lets not blame HR at least they are giving people chance to interview at product based.
Good one bro...
People working at product based companies creates there own library and framework and service based folks heavily rely on whats built by others so how will they understand.
@Deloitte 1 These product companies for their enterprise solutions will open service/consulting divisions if there is a risk of not selling. Microsoft for instance has one. These companies definitely sit on much bigger cash piles than service companies. It's just that service companies claim to do it for a lot cheaper and that is the only value proposition they offer. The service companies exist due to the product companies, not vice versa.
May i know which company was this for?
Usually every or almost every product company is known to take ds and algo interview.
While service company looks for knowledge in specific technologies. So if you were interviewing someone for service company, cant blame the poor chap. He might not have prepared for it.
Yeah it's for product company, Don't want to mentioned the company here but it's. One of it Citrix/NetApp/Cisco..
Best of luck for more interviewing weekends!! 😂 😂
I have taken lot if interviews and I guess it's perfectly fine some one did not remember these.. You have to look for talent or Rattu Tota who remembered everything. Please join college as professor you can give marks on DSA.
If DSA interviews in top product companies required being a rattu tota they would not have such low conversion rates from interview to offer.
The kind of questions asked definitely won't help a rattu tota in getting selected.
There is a reason top product companies pay 5-10x more than service companies and these interviews have helped them choose the right talent.
You will improve thinking, optimising and problem solving skills by practising DSA regularly.
Its like you know the multiplication table. Its not impossible to calculate when it is needed. But if you know it, it will make your life easy. Not so apt analogy though.
But one should not humiliate someone for not knowing DSA. And one should not think it is absolutely unnecessary.
Nothing about author’s post but wanted to share what I have faced in my interviews.
Seriously ppl ask what they read from interview questions or something from net!! Not what we use r incorporate in real time projects. I do not want to mention company name but some one I came across was dumb enough to take any interview! Whatever I answered he has to say no u r confused, suppose if it’s difference b/w 2 n he used to say opposite is correct of my answer. Oh and one more thing some guys are so irritating that what if they r ex tcser why r they behind whether we have got promotion or not or on which band I’m now!! I felt like telling u r here for technical interview not HR to ask anything like this! I so wanted to tell that dumb to go n study at least answers for ur questions n then tell ppl that they r wrong!!
100% true. First I was asked to write a query to show the no of employees having 2nd highest salary after writing query they say u r confused 😂
I am interviewing the candidates almost over 7 years,I never asked any data structures questions so far, according to me those questions are good for freshers,as there is nothing to ask much for them.
I always interview based on Does candidate profile matches the JD
