You need a mentor - that’s the next step
Ask around - every firm has a program to help find mentors . If yours doesn’t for some reason - ask someone in the project or practice for advice on who could potentially mentor you
I’m probably going to get laid off, or if cuts happen, I’ll probably be the first to go. My manager has enforced the fact that he’s having me learn the roots of things before I actually make an impact, but I feel useless at this point.
Any advice, or feedback on how im seeing the situation? Did anyone feel this way too when they started their career?
Straight out of UG, I usually put them on taking notes. Learning to take good concise notes - especially when you don’t have yet a full grasp of the topic and experience - is difficult. Main thing is to watch and learn, google topics that are mentioned, ask intelligent questions to your manager that google doesn’t answer. Understand what the overall engagement objective is, the value proposition to the client, and how your work fits into that deliverable. Then take on more value-dense work as you learn and get faster at completing the grunt work. If you’re at the bottom of the totem pole - you’ll always have to do the grunt work.
Thanks for the feedback. Yeah, I know I’m at the bottom, and totally understand that. I’m not complaining or hoping to skip the feeder tasks. It’s more about my self perception of the value I provide, not ego (nor thinking I’m too good for the current work). When you say “then take on more value-dense work” at what point does this usually happen? That’s what I’m worried about most, when am I supposed to begin adding direct value?
