McKinsey & Company Recently recruited by McKinsey for the Associate role, which required 2 rounds of interviews. After round 1, the recruiter said I did extremely well and to keep doing what I was doing. I performed the same in the final round but got rejected, with the generic feedback that I wasn’t “a good fit.” I don’t understand the drastic difference in feedback between the 1st and final rounds. Is this just a matter of EM’s (1st round) vs. partner’s (final round) standards? McKinsey & Company
I am sorry this happened. You may find some solace in these perspectives and maybe there is some explanatory value.. but let’s not pretend this process isn’t haphazard and highly subjective / susceptible to biases of all kinds. In fact your statement and perception (to the degree that it is reflective of what happened) is testament to the randomness.
On the bright side, get a job in tech, more money for a quarter of the stress !

Was your first round interview feedback from the recruiter or the interviewer? It’s also possible the first round was referring to case and the second to PEI. The most common reason for not passing round 1 is case-related / structure but the most common for round 2 is PEI
I’m in the US. The recruiter gave me feedback after round 1 and the one of the interviewers called me after round 2
Fit sounds like PEI interviews. We take those very seriously. How did you feel those went?

M2 that’s not entirely true either - you can’t exactly get negative feedback but you can still get an offer with lukewarm/ambivalent feedback as long as one partner pounds the table for you
Several sr.partners are not the most pleasant people (to people other than clients). Don’t feel bad - a significant amount of folks who make it want to leave in any case :P
