You need internal referral. Those people saying otherwise don’t want to refer you. Or can’t refer you if it’s outside their region. Ask them to refer you to others who can refer you.
D1 - i don't understand what you mean. I got an internal referral but got asked to put in an application online - you guys are saying these people are lying to me and didnt want to refer me but why would they go through all this effort just to lie to me - they could just say they cant, dont want to or ignore me.
My question is whether the referral would still apply (internal, same office)
Applying online only is a waste of time these days. You would be lucky to get an interview, unless you are doing so after a conversation with the job recruiter. If the job recruiter information is available (LinkedIn), try to reach out to them in a genuine way to explain that you feel the role would fit you, and ask to set up some time to discuss it more.
Internal referrals are tough, because they can be limited to people they have already worked with in the past, or close friends. It depends on the company.
Why do they bother having an application portal in that case?
I have tried speaking to recruiters but its so hard to get a foot in and get anyone to respond.
It probably means that
A. Those people don’t want to refer you. I also had that a lot and then just approached others for referral.
B. They add the referral once you applied via the platform (is also the case for parthenon in some locations).
C. There is no referral process. Then your best chance is to find out who your future partner/manager will be and have chat with them first. They probably convince HR.
A) Is there any chance they wanted to refer me but recruitment had other ideas and just wanted to pawn me off?
C) I would be applying as a generalist from a non-consulting background. How would I find out who that would be?
