I love shorts because I spend a lot of time on YT anyway.
A strategic planner should not assume everyone else’s beliefs, habits, or points of view are the same as theirs.
Definitely not - that’s why I’m asking
I often get served the ‘short video’ tab and YT shorts thumbnails when using The Googlé.
I’d suggest it’s tied to that in order to pull people in for a quick watch and then deeper dive and long form.
I watch those YouTube shorts for political updates and commentary pretty much daily. I hate the fact that on my Android phone I can't accelerate the play speed of Shorts systematically the way I can with a normal YouTube video. Some of the shorts show a little play icon on the bottom that lead to the long form version of the video, and when they do, I click on that to get to the full video and then play that on 1.5X or 2X speed, depending on the speed of speaking.
Some of the shorts are actually long, like 9-10 minutes. For one such creator, she does the videos in the "short" format, but her videos do actually have the speed option button (I haven't figured out why some do and some don't, and if it's a quirk of my phone or Android OS or if it's something in how the creators themselves choose settings when making or publishing those shorts).
I actually listen more than I watch l, as I have a 1.25 hour driving to/from work. That helps me get the lay of the land in terms of the daily chaos and news quickly. I do also play longer videos if I can listen instead of having to see slides or graphics on screen while I'm driving.
Some of the creators are using Tiktok as their primary platform and then reposting those onto YouTube as Shorts without the Tiktok branding. I won't download Tiktok on my phone, so I stick with YouTube.
Is this a strategy question?

Isn’t it just an expansion of garbage to lap up? I definitely don’t prioritize seeking them out but since more than half the time I’m on YouTube it’s to binge mindlessly, I definitely click em from time to time. It’s usually Subway Takes
Yes many people watch shorts. They are YT’s answer to Tiktok. If you are wondering if you have to consider YT Shorts in your asset mix the answer is yes. They deliver a lot of impressions and are a way to optimize the YT platform.
Yeah we have them in our mix. More curious about the behavior - why people would choose shorts over TikTok and reels
