EY Parthenon. One of the sectors they are very well known for (in addition to PE work).
Huron most likely is the lowest pay on this list (situational with Deloitte) but definitely has a strong presence in Higher Ed and competes with much larger firms for projects in the industry—definitely not the case with commercial clients though.
And I would bet that it has the best WLB and company culture out of those firms as well
Oliver Wyman has a very decent EDU practice
Told ya
Interesting thread. Huron has a dedicated higher ed division (P/L) that has 900+ FTE that wake up every day and only do HE (strategy, research, student lifecycle, back office). They are supported by a few thousand other FTE that are capability (technology for the most part) focused.
Would love to hear FTE counts from other firms that are exclusively focused on HE (no “public sector”, healthcare, etc).
EYP and McKinsey are best known for Higher Ed strategy work
OW is strong in ed in general - serve mix of PEs and large corporates across geographies
100% Oliver Wyman. Trust me, dude.
In the practice - DM me if you wanna chat. will give you a candid opinion.
Deloitte doesn’t have WLB but I know clients are happy with them. Although I heard they’re not getting SOWs signed and people being brought on for higher Ed are doing other projects and it’s not going well.
PA consulting (for UK market)
Curious, do you mean Higher Education? Or something else that I am missing?
Higher Education. Sorry about that.
Tangent but how are the clients for higher ed? And would it be possible to move from commercial to HE in any of these firms, or is it different experience required/hard to get into?
University presidents are powerful, but wildly risk-averse (on average) and still beholden to the power of the faculty and deans.
I’d say commercial experience is more relevant in some spaces than others. Def helpful for tech projects or IT strategy, financial modeling once you learn about some nuances of tuition pricing strategy. Less helpful for org, strategy, or student projects that require industry knowledge and where clients will be far more picky about your experience.
Huron is currently working with nearly 400 different higher Ed clients across strategy, technology, research, operations and more. We are by far the largest and most respected higher Ed consulting firm in the industry.
