Where are you located? How much experience? If you’ve been a PM for at least 3 years and still side hustling then you’re at the wrong company.
True but a side hustle can grow your skills in an area you want to pursue. So depends on the person.
Historically this was always the case. There was only a small golden period where it was not.
Exactly - just because something is the status quo doesn't mean it was ever acceptable.

Exactly. It’s wild how “side hustles” went from optional to essential. Full-time pay just isn’t stretching the way it used to.
How much does product management pay where you work, OP?
I still see most mid-level and higher tech roles being enough to survive on. When I first started out, I knew multiple people with two roles at my employer but not anymore.
I had one, but it was laid off immediately after
Is it a matter of survival or of trying to live outside their means? Not judging, I don’t know their circumstances, but most Americans spend more than they earn. Kind of the whole “act your wage” scenario.
Have you seen statistics of wages vs inflation for the past 60 years? If so, you should know that it is nearly impossible to live “within one’s means” in most cities because the purchasing power of Americans has been decreasing thanks to Trickle Down Economics courtesy of Reagan. This whole “pull yourself up by your bootstraps” mentality likes to ignore how the rich have been getting richer thanks to Reagan’s policies while everyone else has lost purchasing power - inflation has outpaced wage increases - that's a fact. Did you know that Americans aren't allowed as much vacation time as most people in other developed countries? Half of Americans don't even have a passport - so many Americans aren't just throwing away money on vacations and non-essentials because 1) they aren't given the time, and 2) they can't afford it.
I also do some side hustle in tech if I find some. Fulltime job raises are not keeping up with inflation.
