I networked and met an agency’s CCO, emailed him asking for an internship, followed up multiple times, finally interviewed with a senior cw, got the internship (paid), worked my ass off for 8 months and just signed today for a junior cw role at the agency.
TL;DR: network your ass off. ask for what you want, it’s not going to be handed to you.
Do you have a book and did you go to portfolio school? You don’t necessarily need to have gone to portfolio school, but it definitely helps in understanding how to put your best foot (and work) forward.
Go into finance and retire early
I went to risd for undergrad (fashion design) and have years of editorial writing experience. since last june i took two ad classes at SVA and I am currently finishing up a course at Adhouse. Thanks to those classes i was able to create a site with spec work
Any advice for internships when you’re no longer a 4-yr college student? A lot of postings have strict stipulations.
Send me an email. I'd be happy to chat/ advise as I've mentored a few young writers when they started in the industry. Erica punting at gmail

Do you have internships? What's your writing background? Journalism? Ad school?
Strong portfolio. Take on some projects for free and do some spec work. Find mentors, people to grab coffee with who can help with feedback/introductions. It took me a little over two years to completely transition to copywriting, but it can be done. Good luck!
Hmm... I think an internship would do you some good. Really tough to go straight from class portfolio to a job.
Ad internship that is. Either way, networking with creatives in the industry will help, introducing yourself to recruiters, etc. Simply applying to an application doesn't really do anyone good in this industry, you'll just go into a pile of garbage. Personal connections get jobs.
We have interns who are in their second careers. Experience and maturity do go a long way.
If you have a book and aren’t getting bites, it may be the work. The work always comes first. If your book is good no one will care if you had internships or not. If it’s bad, internships won’t help.
Go to the book review bowl and post a link to your work (or do it here if you’re comfortable). Get some actual feedback on the work.
