1. Accenture
2. Accenture
2.5 large scale Accenture but complex or mid scale Slalom
3. Slalom
4. Slalom
5. Slalom
6. Mostly Accenture except in cases where Accenture lost customer trust
7. Depends on how well you play the game but I would say most people will progress faster at Accenture and reach a ceiling at a higher title
8. Competitive but you may have to be a bit aggressive on raising comp discussions at Slalom
For brand recognition even people not in consulting know of Accenture
Have never heard of slalom prior to this post
In our local public sector space, that had made deep inroads, where Accenture had failed. I lost a couple of projects to them … and so naturally used to be curious and gave them a higher status. Accenture caught up eventually..
i worked accenture and now i’m at slalom!!
1) accenture
2) i was in agile consulting but i’ve heard tech strat is really great in accenture. slalom tech strat consultants are so smart here at slalom.
3) slalom-just had a meeting yesterday w the ceo saying no layoffs basically ever, office is fun of people. (accenture was fine at best, didn’t go into the office ever.)
4) slalom 100%. i was on PCT projects working on the east coast in accenture & my project managers wanted me working last 8pm EST on a friday.
5) slalom. at accenture i never met anyone who worked there for more than 6 years. at slalom we have multiple people who have been here for 16 years.
6) not sure. slalom has great alliances w microsoft/google
7) it depends. accenture you have to be reallllllly close to your people lead & they decide. i didn’t get promoted there. slalom i’ve seen promotions.
8) depends on what you bring to the table. slalom pays stupid money if you’ve worked Big 4 previously-tech principals get like $10k bonus on top of base. accenture pays same as Big 4 if not a little less.
i’d go with slalom if i were you-tech is really great at slalom.
With regards to your #3 point, It pays to still be cautious. No promise is written in the stars. If the CEO leaves, then what? If the company experiences loss, then what?
Another company, ExxonMobil said the same thing, then Covid-19 happened, and that promise was broken
1. Accenture
2. Accenture
2.5 Slalom
3. Slalom
4. Slalom
5. Slalom
6. Slalom
7. Not sure at Accenture but Slalom can move up pretty quickly as a high performing niche player bringing in business
Hard to say because can be a wide range but probably 170-200 TC
Ex Accenture here!
1. Accenture
2. Accenture
3. Slalom
4. Slalom
Meh. Unsolicited advice that I’m not seeing in the comments. Your analysis is wrong. If you want a career in consulting… you need staying power. (Your analysis is correct for evaluating industry roles or a jump up [I’m assuming you’re lateral in this thread]). If you move to Slalom that’s almost like… a message of “I couldn’t hack it, I’m going to a smaller playground”
I’d say stick it out at Accenture. Join a practice that’s kicking ass and bust your ass. Once you make AD/D then your analysis and competition between Accenture and Slalom might make sense. Till then been churning that work for WBS project by project.
Side note kicking ass isn’t the only prerequisite. You have to be known here. (Much like all other competitive places).
Prioritizing immediate $/hr is myopic unless you plan to retire within 10 years. Even if you have no interest in type of work and just want to optimize earnings, it makes more sense to prioritize expected $/hr across your career, which is a calculation dominated by career trajectory.
Slightly less $/hr now is well worth it if you can get much better exit opps. You’ll be making a lot, lot more in 15 years if you play your cards right. This also has implications for 5: attrition. If attrition is due to good exit opps (which can have high TC and low hours depending on industry and role) then high attrition is not necessarily a bad thing.
Have to be more nuanced with your analysis to make a good long term decision.
Accenture is a behemoth of a company. Working there, you aren't a cog in the machine, more like a speck of dust. Can't compete with a reputation that big though. Slalom is a growing competitor. Slalom definitely has the smaller company feel and with that, you are treated 100x better. Also being privately owned, they have proven that they care about their employees. Invaluable given the current state of the global economy. I worked 6 months at Accenture and I couldn't wait to get out of there.
What if it’s a level up and better salary? No travel and better wlb?
Exit after a few years. Will explain in more details tomorrow , BCG. I am fuming at the fact that ACN underpaid me for many years. Need to sleep in it for a little bit. Thanks for the inputs & the guidance ..
I would add promotions to the list
That sounds good. From none to MD tomorrow
If it’s Accenture consulting, don’t see any reason you would go slalom besides WLB
Honestly, I don’t think I’ve ever worked over 40 hours in a week here. It’s great. Stress levels in my life are very low.
I would say pretty easily accenure with 1,2,2.5, and 6. Would have slalom with 4 and 5. 3 is a push IMO
It’s not regional. Slalom is the #1 AWS partner worldwide in terms of revenue delivered. It is surprising. Our CEOs are pretty close friends.
