Slalom 🐠 - how do you like working there? Becoming increasingly interested in the company and like the local model. How is comp compared to big 4? Work life balance? Good clients? Thanks!!

Only been here a short time and not entirely sure on these points, so would appreciate other slalom folks to confirm/clarify.

I really like working here. I'm very comfortable but doing more meaningful work than I was before and treated more like a professional/expert (obviously this would vary for people based on how they are currently being treated). Experience will vary wildly due to local model and as always due to client, but I feel like it's many of the great things about consulting without many of the shitty things with big consulting (working extra hours just for optics, huge drawn out administrative processes).

It also feels like clients are aware of the slalom culture and there isn't an expectation for you to be a working machine.

Comp is good but can vary based on your skillset, local office, and how well you negotiate. I am 25 in a low CoL making 120k. Bonus is reportedly 5-10% but I'm still not completely sure the criteria that determines how much you get.

I've also heard raises can be quite stagnant, especially if you are near the top of your pay band. The word is that if you want a significant raise like typical big consulting firms have and you've reached the top of your pay band, you have to get promoted to do so.

I'm not entirely clear on how promotion works either. As you may know, most of the company is consultant level, some consultants having 10-15+ years experience. What was described to me is manager role = sales expectations, consultant = none. I've heard promotion is something like, you make it known to your people manager you want to go for a promotion, the two of you discuss how far off you are/what's needed to make that move, and if you can check all those boxes and take on that extra responsibility then you can get promoted.

My understanding is that the default nature of being a consultant at slalom is that there is no up or out and no boxes for you to check to keep your job. Obviously, you would still have those boxes to check regarding performance and such.

I came from D and my comp is higher at Slalom. YMMV. Work-life is an actual concern at Slalom, not just talk!

Insurance benefits are the same across the board. I find them to be good. I’m not sure how it would stack up to where you’re coming from but I have no complaints.

OP I’m in NYC so feel free to DM me if you have specific questions/want to talk in more detail. Overall I’ve found NY leadership to really care about work life balance. Commutes can be tough at times due to nature of transit in NYC but on the whole they want their teams to be happy. Client roster is a pretty broad range of industries and includes some really great clients to work with. There’s also plenty of opportunity to move around if you want to get breadth of experience instead of focusing on one industry. I’ve heard comp is lower than big 4, but I didn’t come from there so can’t be sure. Overall I love the culture here in NY, I find the work interesting, and the people in the office are pretty great

like

It’s the stock answer here, but what city are you looking at? Especially when it comes to work, clients, etc. it’s heavily market dependent. Overall I’d say work life balance is very good and the culture is pretty great across the board.

Thanks! Looking in NYC. My experience is in financial services advisory (3 years) but open to other client types

A friend of mine moved there from a big 4 and quit within a few weeks. Said didn’t like the culture at all and the alleged flat model was actually an issue, everyone fighting for work at the client across levels etc. Take it with a pinch of salt as this is second hand info but 🤷🏽‍♂️

I’m loving it but not from B4 background (I have an agency background). Comp is amazing.

Thanks everyone!! Really appreciate the replies.
@SC4 - what level/years of experience did you have before moving to Slalom?

Came in with four years (SC at D)

Currently a senior 3 at EY and hope to get promoted to manager next year by October. Is it better to move over to BCG after promotion as a project leader? Or would that not be a lateral move as a EY manager?

Expecting an offer this week or early next week, but want to know when you start negotiating the salary? When you receive the call from the company or wait until receiving the formal offer letter? I have just recently accepted a position as Director of Compliance at a Fin-Tech company here in Naples, FL.. My previous 17 YOE were strictly in the Financial industry. That seems low to me.

Context: I applied for a position a while back and got interviewed, but didn’t go to the next round. I found the same position open again a month later at a different location and applied. Almost immediately, I was called for an interview, but with the same interviewer. What does this mean? Is this going to get awkward?

Alternatively I could go the lower end route at get everything for like $800. Is that wise? I hear horror stories about low quality and paint chipping from the baby teething on the crib.

I am interviewing for an in-house role that I am really excited about, but they require 5 days in office. I have young kids, and these last few years of remote work and flexibility have really been crucial in helping manage it all.
