1) is this normal recruiting for slalom? 2) should i have applied to an actual role before going through all this?
Those can be normal if they're determining your fit between the local office, Build (regional tech heavy), or Emerge (specialty, more global)
Outside of that, it's odd for an actual interview process. Then again, I had to interview with seven people to determine best fit and get hired remotely.
Did you provide your resume? If so, they might have created a formal application for you. Beyond that, this situation is a little odd.
Hmm… I’m confused why they wouldn’t ask you that. Generally, those things would be known first before having you to talk people from leadership. I’m wondering if you are dealing w/ a non mature market. All our markets really range in maturity when it comes to onboarding, etc.

You goofed by not discussing salary range upfront
thats the odd part! conversations started off very casual and i didn’t think i was even in an interview stage because they did not explicitly tell me that. i just thought we were having conversations to determine where i would fit. normally, the first thing recruiters ask is about compensation so hence the post
you are being leveled
It’s a little odd, but our process can be a bit loose. They’re trying to determine fit, as you said. We often don’t know what role/level someone is a fit for until they go through the process. But not good if you are confused. And typically we want to understand expectations before go get too far into the process. My recommendation is to ask the recruiter these specific questions. Tell them you’d like to understand the role you’re being considered for and that you want to share your comp expectations before getting too far ahead. I’m sure they’d welcome that.
