Problem solving and communication is what keeps people around. I’m not sure if I would say that was the biggest selling point of bringing them in. The issue is the soft skills are often thrown around in a generic sense, but do actually mean a lot. I focus more on technical when trying to get hired though.
Yeah I think I could see that being true in sales, where personality and interpersonal skills and communication type stuff is way more important than technical knowledge. I doubt this applies outside of sales though.
The way I think of it is that there's a baseline of technical skills that should be assumed. But what makes someone a good salesman isn't that. It's the ability to think on their feet, tell a story, come up with solutions, listen to someone's concerns, and so on. So sure, soft skills matter, but they need to work with the underlying competency in business principles.
