Spent a long time working for a reputable insurance defense firm before switching to plaintiff PI. Recently let go from plaintiff PI firm due to pandemic financial cutbacks. Consider myself to be a good lawyer with a small network of good connections. Not interested in going back to insurance defense. Thoughts on going solo? Live in greater LA area.

A female colleague of mine made the leap of faith and opened her own PI firm. She worked in the field for about 10 yrs before doing so. She is thriving. I say go for it! Now is the time! If not now, when?

What do you have to lose? More years of people telling you what to do? :-)

I went solo out of law school 10 years ago. First few years are tough. Don’t be picky at first, you’ll have to take some bad clients. But it’ll work out. And what’s the risk? If you want out in a few years, you’re just back in the same position you are now, with an economy and job market that will almost certainly be better.

Which companies have best WLB, least stressed DS/DA roles? I’ve been suffering from some immunology issues and stress from work would worsen it, therefore I want to move to a company/role with good benefit (esp. healthcare) and great WLB (little chance of PIP, etc). Doesn’t have to be high-paying, as long as it can support my life (single) and long-term medical cost. Thanks in advance.

7 year lawyer here. Been with the same big national firm all 7 years (not BigLaw) doing complex litigation. Been working remote a long time due to moving around for wife’s job. As a result of the moving was bumped off partner track. I’m looking at a great small firm that will be a practice change (but still litigation). I’m told they’re looking for someone with less experience and they’re skeptical because of my experience. It’s frustrating. How do I overcome this?
