Thank you for sharing EY. I am personally curently struggling with this as well. Not on the professional side but more on the personal side. I try to pray about it when I don’t feel too upset about it or when I don’t feel too upset with God. I know He’s an amazing God, and so generous… but yea I am struggling too lol
I have always been about 5 years "behind" the average for my peers and also struggled with this. Variance gets a lot wider the higher you go, though. Anyway I just try to appreciate the things I'm AHEAD on (for example I have 3 kids including a teenager, whereas some colleagues are still waiting to have their first). Comparison is the thief of joy, but at the end of the day we all have things to be thankful for..
When I was your age I was SC also btw. :) 35 y/o new SM now.
I trust in Him and don’t compare myself to my peers. He puts problems in our paths that He knows we can overcome, and He also puts us where He needs us. So if its not going to my plan, then I remind myself that He has a Plan that I can’t see, and that He’ll have me where He needs me to be or that He’ll make use of me wherever I am. It helps to not stress the little stuff, because he has blessed me with so much already.
31 as SC isn’t uncommon. At Deloitte MBA’s are coming in as SC at 28-30. It’s a 3-year level so at 31-33 they are still SC. You can’t always compare yourself with youngest outliers.
Life is not a race
Also most people at 31 are still making under 60k. They are also complaining why you are making 3x. The comparison never ends. Elon Musk’s son was born with the elite title that we will probably never achieve. No need to feel bad about yourself.
I started as an associate at 25 and worked my way up the standard road to be a senior at 27. There were managers and directors that were one year older than me that were managers and senior managers. It didn’t bother me because it was well deserved and they knew there stuff and started early. If it’s one thing I’ve learned is the biggest competition you have is yourself and own your thoughts. As long as you see your own growth and do your best it’s all that matters. Everyone’s trajectory and story is different. Just make sure you want it for you and no anyone else. Look at those partners and directors lifestyles? Aside from money is that something you really want?
OP - I understand what you are going through. I had a similar trajectory. I joined from a smaller consulting firm as a Senior Consultant at 30. My counselor was younger to me and the Senior Manager on my engagement was just a year older to me (The SM was also fond of talking about how quickly he had climbed the ranks). There were many days I felt discouraged but at the moments when I felt like giving up, God provided me the encouragement I needed. It would come through a call from another fellow Christian brother from my men’s group, a sermon I would listen to after work or just by reading the Word.
Eventually God opened doors and I also had my share of lucky breaks. I got promoted twice and I became a Senior Manager at 36 years. In the waiting, God worked on me and taught me patience and humility. It wasn’t easy and there are several people who reached this career milestone early but like some other great comments above - our career is a marathon and not a sprint. Our life ultimately is a journey and not a competition.
What age did you start in consulting OP?
I only joined after 30; I had been in industry for a while but had a hard time getting promoted because of the teams I was always ended up with
I trust that god was humble and a carpenter during this age. You are on track.
If it makes you feel better I’m 28 and have been an an analyst since i was 26

I’m 32 and will be coming back to the firm as an SC at 33! I went to business school which put me about 2 years back, but I am also not in a rush. Work is a marathon and I don’t see things get easier as I move up. Take heart, you are where you are for a reason and purpose
