Strategy folks - how do you get good at … strategy?

Recently started at a startup in a role where I’m the only person under the head of our product team who handles the strategy-focus of the company. He wants me to take more ownership from him and I want to crush it but have no relevant experience here and am still fairly junior. Any books or classes? Or is it just trial by fire.

Step 1: Be really confident in what you say
Step 2: Find out what your leadership team believes to be true
Step 3: Define the strategy based on what they want, with graphs or charts that are interesting, on PowerPoints that are well formatted

Read up on structured thinking, no particular book, just the general concepts and many different ways to do it.

This'll help you define structures from which you build your own concepts and approaches to problems. The structure, once familiarized with your stakeholders, will also serve as the basis of understanding for all of your ideas for your audience; this keeps you rooted in something and not coming up with seemingly random ideas.

Once you have the buy-in and have clearly defined overall strategy, momentum will roll.

My biggest strong suit is my seamless ability to connect bigger picture themes. It’s why I wanted to embark on this path. However, what I need to hone in on is my ability to confidently communicate the thoughts in my head. Articulating my thoughts/ideas effectively is what I’m working on - both verbally and in the work I put out - and I think that developing my structured thinking would greatly benefit in that regard.

This was great. Very helpful insight, thank you.

Clay Christensen had some really good books on strategy, I took his class a few years ago and it was fantastic. Highly recommend his stuff

I have applied for internal job which is effectively one level above, meaning it would be a promotion.

I accepted a $115K base salary, 13% bonus, 10k sign on bonus (scientist supervisor) job and two weeks later, got a $135K base, 17% bonus, and 15K sign on bonus (Senior scientist role) offer from another company. Should I accept the new offer ? How do I tell the previous company about this? Also, I’ve already negotiated with the first company and the $115K base is the negotiated salary. I really do not prefer one company over the other. They’re both great! I’m very confused here. TIA🙏

I’m struggling. I left an agency I liked last year due to growth limitations and since then I’ve worked at 2 different agencies and can’t seem to find my footing. The first one seemed like a good fit at first but then it turned out to not be the best place for me so I left. At my current agency I feel super undervalued. I’m always raising my hand and offering to help where I can and no matter what I do, I don’t feel utilized or valued or part of the team. It’s really taken a toll on my confidence
